Live-action remake of Disney’s hit movie ‘Moana’ to be released in 2025, Dwayne Johnson reveals

Fans of the 2016 popular film “Moana” have something to rejoice and look forward to as a live-action film is scheduled to be released on June 27, 2025.

It was last April when the announcement of the remake of the 2016 hit film was made. Thomas Kail, director of Broadway’s Hamilton, was chosen to direct the remake.

Meanwhile, Dwayne Johnson, who was the voice actor behind the character of Maui in the 2016 film, is set to play his role in the movie. He announced the official release date through his Instagram account.

“Humbled (and excited) to share our official release date for our live-action @disneystudios MOANA, June 27, 2025,” he wrote.

The 2016 film “Moana” revolved around the story of the girl who explored the sea to find Maui and bring back the heart of the Goddess Te Fiti in order to save their people.

Aside from Johnson, other actors who took part in this popular film include Auli’i Cravalho (Moana), Rachel House (Gramma Tala), and Temuera Morrison (Chief Tui).

Producing live-action films is not new to Disney. Last month, it released the live-action film “The Little Mermaid,” which was a remake of the 1989 film by Disney of the same name. Leading the cast of this film are Halle Bailey as Ariel and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric.

There are many live-action films being developed and planned by Disney from its animated movies that people loved through the years.

Among these are “Lilo & Stitch,” “Snow White,” and “Mufasa: The Lion King,” which is said to be a prequel to Disney’s classic animated movie “Lion King.”

It was said that Cravalho, the actress behind the voice of Moana, will not be back to play the role.

Based on an Instagram video posted by the actress last month, she said that it is vital that the casting of the film represents the characters and stories they want to tell accurately.

Cravalho added that she cannot wait to help in looking for the next actress that will present the courageous spirit, undeniable wit, and emotional strength of Moana.
