British actress and singer Paloma Faith expressed her criticisms on the new “The Little Mermaid” film.
However, her comments did not sit well with many online users.
Paloma Faith is known for the songs “Only Love Can Hurt Like This,” “Picking Up The Pieces,” “Upside Down,” among others. She was also a judge and coach in the popular singing show “The Voice” and “The Voice Kids” in the UK.
Aside from these, Faith is also part of the television series “Pennyworth.”
The Little Mermaid live-action film was recently released in theaters in different parts of the world and has been getting good reviews from fans and casual viewers.
The film performed well at the box office and generated an estimated $118 million over the memorial day weekend, according to a report. This is a remake of the popular animated version in 1989.
In an Instagram story, the singer shared that she has seen the new film with her children. Faith commended Halle Bailey who played the role of Ariel for her good performance.
However, the singer was unhappy that Ariel sacrificed a part of herself just for her love interest.
[Spoiler Alert]
Faith was referring to the part of the film where Ariel, the young mermaid protagonist, gave up her extraordinary voice and power to be with Prince Eric, portrayed by Jonah Hauer-King.
“Just seen the new little mermaid with my kids and while I think Halle gives a good performance and it’s great casting, as a mother of girls I don’t want my kids to think it’s ok to give up your entire voice and your powers to love a man,” Faith wrote in her Instagram story.
The singer added that this part of the film is not what she wants to teach the future generation of women. “Not what I want to be teaching next gen women at all,” she added in her Instagram story.
Following the reports, many online users on Twitter did not agree with Paloma Faith’s comment on the film. Many users on the platform wondered if the singer is aware of the story of the popular film.
That comment paloma faith has made about the little mermaid has done my head in. You just agreed to perform at the coronation, then want to drag a fictional movie for “teaching girls to give up their voices for a man?”

Who else didn't even know who paloma faith even was until the dumb comment about the little mermaid, because I sure as hell had no idea who she was

All this virtue signaling you are doing about Halle’s performance and it turns out you’ve always wanted to be the little mermaid?!? This is loser behavior! 🤣🤣 pic.twitter.com/dloL2isThp

People give up many things you love. Right or wrong. But let's set the record straight. A man did not ask the little mermaid to give up her voice. It was her feminist Aunt that tricked her into doing it so she could rule the seas over the little mermaids father the king.

Many users also said that Ariel did not actually give up her voice just to be with the prince, but because she also actually wants to explore and be part of the world of humans.
“Wait until she finds out that this is the plot of the original, while Ariel gives up her voice in the new version not just for Eric, but for the sake of actually going and seeing how humans live,” an online user said in a quote retweet.
“Not only is this the exact same plot from the original movie but I’m tired of this narrative because if y’all actually paid ATTENTION to the movie you’d know Ariel wanted to be human WAY before she even saw and fell in love with Eric so she didn’t give up her voice for a MAN,” another online user tweeted.
