Avatar: The Way of Water overtakes Titanic, becomes the third-highest-grossing film of all time

Canadian filmmaker James Cameron’s newest box-office hit, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ has overtaken the Oscar-winning film director’s blockbuster epic ‘Titanic’ in the all-time worldwide ranking; it is now the third-highest-grossing movie ever, behind ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is the first-ever film during the pandemic era to enter the box office charts. The movie, which splashed into theaters last year, continues to make waves in 2023. The 2022 sci-fi sequel has accumulated $2.2433 billion and surpasses the $2.2438 billion of the 1997 ‘Titanic’ at the global box office. ‘The Way of Water’ snagged the third spot while ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Avatar’ were in the second and first spots, respectively.

Apart from ‘The Way of Water,’ Cameron has also produced three of the top four film in the global ranking to gross $2 billion or more, including the original ‘Avatar’ which is still leading the charts. Meanwhile, Marvel Studios’ 2019 film ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is at No. 2—making it the only non-Cameron-directed release in the big four.

Similar to the first ‘Avatar’ story, the sequel’s success is credited to its 3D setup, but in a more premium kind of way. On IMAX screens, the film has made around $250 million, more than many other films have earned during their theatrical release.

According to Shawn Robbins, the chief analyst of BoxOfficePro, Cameron knows how to deal with the modern audience as he continues to ‘chase himself on the box office charts’.

Set more than ten years after the first release, ‘The Way of Water’ follows the Pandora adventures of Jake Sully and Neytiri together with their five children. An ancient menace resurfaces during their exploration of Pandora’s regions, forcing Jake to battle humans.
