DLSU ENGLICOM brings back the grand on-campus Chinese New Year celebration this 2023

One of De La Salle University-Manila’s oldest and biggest student organizations hops right back this Chinese New Year! Committed to the long-term goal and nation-building of social and cultural events, ENGLICOM bridges Filipino and Chinese cultures once again with this Lunar New Year celebration. The Filipino-Chinese socio-civic group was always known for sharing and promoting Chinese traditions within the Lasallian community. One of Englicom’s goals is to bridge Filipino and Chinese cultures through events like the Lunar New Year celebration and to share and promote Chinese culture with the Lasallian population.

This 2023, Englicom celebrates the Chinese New Year “In 兔 the Rabbit Hole”, a 5 day event that invites every Lasallian to come and celebrate the new years through multiple games and learn more about the traditions of Chinese New Year. The event was held at the grounds of the Henry Sy building, which included many fun mini booths and also served various types of food for the Lasallians to enjoy throughout the week. For each day, there was a sponsored food booth which gave out free chinese food for the students to avail and enjoy, namely these were from: David’s Tea House, Kraver’s Eatery, ChaChaGo, and Simply Sumptuous. The game booth on the other hand had a special game for the students to enjoy such as  Find the AngPao, Spin the Wheel, Dumpling Making Competition, Noodle Eating Challenge, and Family Feud for Lasallians to play. Through ENGLICOM’s goal to combine Filipino and Chinese culture, booths such as Tumbang Kuneho, which was inspired by Tumbang Preso were also set up to encourage Lasallians to immerse themselves in the Chinese culture.

On the last day of the event there was a Grand Raffle, which gives one lucky winner a chance to win a 3rd Generation Apple Airpods. Each participant was given a stamp card which must be completed to gain a raffle entry. In order to receive an entry, a participant must be able to fully complete the 10 stamps needed in the stamp card. For a person to earn a stamp they must win a game from any of the booths available in the event.

Englicom was also proud to showcase talents from in and out of De La Salle University, who performed traditional dances and songs.Performances included the Traditional Chinese Lion and Dragon Dance, and the Viridescent. There were also multiple Chinese themed activities such as the Dumpling Making Contest, and the Lantern Making Festival.

Overall, Englicom’s “In 兔 the Rabbit Hole” was a success. Every Lasallian was invited whether they be a teacher, a student, or staff. This event was held to showcase to everyone the long traditions of the Chinese in the New Years and to also have fun. The participants definitely enjoyed the activities and culture prepared in the event.
