Over the weekend, the world saw the inauguration of Donald Trump as the new president of the United States of America. The next day, hundreds of thousands of people showed up for the women’s march in major cities around the world to protest against misogyny, racism, and the rampant hate that seem to characterize the divisive rise to power of Trump.
Various forms of protests against Trump has sprouted across America ever since he was hailed as an official presidential candidate. Aside from taking to the streets, artists, writers, and musicians have used their craft to make their voices heard. Even hollywood A-listers like Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro have spoken against the new commander-in-chief.
A Los Angeles-based artist named Illma Gore, who has previously stirred controversy with her illustration depicting a nude Trump, once again used her craft to express her dissent. This time, though, she used human blood.
Gore created a 10-foot by 15-foot mural entitled “Rise Up Thy Young Blood”, which is also a call to action and unity for her fellow Americans. Around 50 people donated blood for the project, with the artist using her own blood as well. It depicts men and women of various races working together to create the American Flag, and was inspired by the painting of Henry Mosler entitled “The Birth of the Flag” .
