Red Velvet’s comeback concept proves they’re ‘Concept Queens’

SM Entertainment is famously known as a frontrunner in K-Pop group concepts, and their groups absolutely crush it every time they release new content and music. Red Velvet, one of the groups managed by SM Ent., are recognized for their unique dual concept that’s made waves within the K-Pop industry, and is most evident from their name itself—“red” and “velvet.”

The contrast between the two concepts can be seen greatly in their music, styling, and public image. “Red” is their more powerful image paired musically with the pop genre, while “Velvet” conveys their more sensual and feminine styling with mostly R&B and ballads.

With Red Velvet’s more recent music releases and content (*ahem* Queendom), they’ve successfully mixed both “red” and “velvet” concepts with such sophistication that (personally) not one group can top (except their predecessors, ofc).

ICYMI: Red Velvet will be making their return to music after 8 months on March 21, 2022, with their 7th mini-album, “The ReVe Festival: Prologue – Feel My Rhythm”. Fans have been awaiting new music from the girl group, with each member embarking on different solo activities in between the release of “Queendom” and up till the present.

Of course, with the announcement of their comeback, comes the reveal of their new concept. And as always, Red Velvet has slain the game, obviously solidifying their unofficial title as “Concept Queens.”

On March 7, 2022, at 12 M.N. KST, SM Ent. and Red Velvet dropped the girl group’s comeback scheduler, which was designed like a music sheet. Jaws dropped as soon as this was posted, as this was a never-before-seen format from a K-Pop group. Like, if you’ve seen it, it’s gorgeous. It’s giving classical vibes.

The scheduler revealed the two concepts that Red Velvet will embody this comeback: calmato (calm, tranquil) and capriccioso (fast, intense). Reveluvs have deduced that the comeback will mix both “red” and “velvet” images again, and they can’t get enough of it.

Fans have also made connections to Red Velvet’s scheduler to Johann Sebastian Bach’s piece, “Air on the G String”. Others have made memes about Red Velvet’s “come Bach.”

On March 8, 2022, Red Velvet dropped their first group teaser photo in the theme “calmato”, and girl, it was stunning.

Can’t wait for the next set of teaser photos this coming week and next! Red Velvet just keeps slaying everyone, man. They’re absolutely amazing.
