Toxic no more? Britney Spears’ father agrees to step down as conservator

Britney Spears’ case makes major progress as her father expresses intention to willingly step aside as the conservator to her estate. Atty. Mathew Rosengart, who was hired by the pop star as her attorney to work for the termination of the conservatorship, called this a “a major victory for Britney, and another step towards justice.” The singer has been under this legal guardianship for a long 13 years.

A conservatorship is a legal appointment of a person or entity to manage the financial and/or personal affairs of someone who is incapacitated to manage their own. In the case of Britney Spears, her father was approved to be in charge of both her assets and daily life back in 2008. This is due to the heavily publicized display of her erratic behavior during a significantly difficult part of her life.

In 2007, the music icon underwent a divorce and a custody battle with her ex-husband Kevin Federline. After numerous personal struggles, she eventually lost custody of her sons. This was also the time when her viral stage performance on MTV Video Music Awards happened.

And so the conservatorship continued, but not without public scrutiny and being the subject to conspiracy theories. It was in 2019 when Britney decided to go on hiatus due to her father’s health issues, eventually checking into a mental health facility. Jamie Spears consequently steps aside as conservator of her “person”, which was passed onto care manager Jodi Montgomery. Jamie remained a conservator of her assets.

The public might not have over fixated on this if not for an anonymous statement made through a podcast. The man, who claimed to be a former paralegal of the conservatorship, shared some disturbing information about the singer’s condition. This then led to the public outcry for her freedom, which is the #FreeBritney Movement.

The movement gained traction again through Tiktok in 2020, due to an odd video that the pop icon posted on the app. This sparked further discussions of what might be currently happening in her life.

The #FreeBritney Movement also found support from several celebrities, including Cher, Paris Hilton, and Miley Cyrus.

What definitely took the cake with regards to supporting her case on the conservatorship is the documentary released earlier this year by the New York Times, “Framing Britney Spears”. The film detailed all the aspects of her career and personal life, and how everybody around her contributed to her life’s ruin.

Just last June, the singer finally took a step into freeing herself from the abusive and hostile agreement. In a court proceeding, she details the mistreatment she has experienced which includes drugging, numerous psychological evaluations and nonconsensual implanting of an intrauterine contraceptive device. A lightly edited transcript of her full statement is made available here.

With the new development and unexpected cooperation of her father, the stars might just align with the fate of Britney Spears. Here’s to hoping for her freedom!
