Daft Punk, one of the most influential electronic acts to emerge in the past few decades, have just announced their retirement.
After a three year hiatus, the duo finally came out of hiding only to reveal that they have decided to split up. The last time we saw them was in the 2017 Grammy Awards where they performed with The Weeknd. The Parisian pair uploaded an eight-minute video titled “Epilogue,” ending it with a bang in true Daft Punk fashion. Their longtime publicist, Kathryn Frazier, officially confirmed the break up without further details.
Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo formed Daft Punk in 1993, quickly becoming a landmark in the French EDM scene. A part of their appeal was the anonymity they kept behind their trademark robot head pieces. It didn’t matter what they looked like, their work was enough to keep us playing it on repeat. Daft Punk cemented themselves as global superstars in mainstream music with their unique sound.
Throughout their iconic career, they’ve bagged the Album of the Year award at the 2014 Grammys, been sampled by Kanye West on ‘Stronger’, and soundtracked the Disney movie ‘Tron: Legacy’. Daft Punk also changed the game with their out-of-this-world visuals in their music videos.
