Ateneo Mathematics Society’s Sipnayan XXII: Across the GalaXXII to blast off this November

Ateneo Mathematics Society is organizing its 22nd installation of Sipnayan, an annual mathematics contest for students from different schools, from November 4-28 2020. This event aims to promote math excellence through the various activities that it will offer. Titled as Sipnayan 2020: Across the GalaXXII, this year’s event will feature a series of talks on various topics of competition-level math for different grade levels through Zoom and Facebook, and will follow a different format for the competition through Google Forms.

Several mathematics professors from the Ateneo de Manila University will share their expertise on various topics in competitive-level mathematics for the event. Dr. Jumela Sarmiento will be discussing Number Theory for the Grade School Division, Dr. Christian Paul Chan Shio will be tackling the Fundamental Counting Principles for the Junior High School Division, and Dr. Richard Eden will explore Series and Sequences for the Senior High School Division. To culminate the event, Dr. Queena Lee-Chua will give a talk on General Problem Solving, specifically in math competitions. The talks will happen every Saturday of November: November 7 for Grade School, November 14 for Junior High School, November 21 for Senior High School, and November 28 for the culminating talk.

Aside from the talks, students may also join this year’s competition, which runs for three days after each of the three divisions’ talks. Registrants will be given a 10-question problem set right after the lecture, and are given until the nearest Tuesday, at 11:59 PM, to submit their answers. Top-performing students will also be featured in the event’s Crew of the Month poster after the culminating talk, and will also be given various prizes.

Due to the current global situation, the usual format of the prestigious competition won’t be followed. However, this year’s organizing team aims to utilize this as an opportunity to expand Sipnayan’s reach to the national scale. To this effort, Sipnayan 2020 is open to any student across the country who’s willing to learn the various competitive-level mathematics techniques that our esteemed speakers will offer.

If you are interested in participating in the talks or in the competition, you may visit the AMS Sipnayan Facebook Page at https://facebook.com/AMSSipnayan or contact us through [email protected]
