Just in time for 420, #LegalizeMaruya becomes a trending topic on Twitter

For marijuana smokers and non-smokers alike, the 420 holiday is a perfect time to push for marijuana reforms or celebrate its legalization in some parts of the world. In fact, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML)—a non-profit organization based in Washington, DC—is hosting a series of online virtual 4/20 celebrations throughout the day wherein participants can listen to live musical performances and learn more about reform plans from lawmakers.

Meanwhile, in the Philippines, Twitter users decided to legalize a different type of drug that most Pinoys love to munch on during merienda (snack time). The #LegalizeMaruya became a trending topic today on Twitter with 7,157 tweets—and seriously though, we had to do a double-take to check whether there was some sort of a typo here.

But yes, Pinoy online users are actually talking about the famed sliced, deep-fried banana we often see in the streets, along with its siblings, turon and banana cue. Now, the question is why on earth #LegalizeMaruya became today’s hot topic?

Although the answer remains undefined, #LegalizeMaruya has spawned hilarious tweets—and here are some of our favorites.

We have so many questions

No matter how hard you try to explain what a maruya is, we still don’t get WHY IT’S A TRENDING TOPIC ON TWITTER JUST WHYYYY

Now some people are thinking it’s some sort of drugs

But if it’s a call to support our local desserts, then count us in!

Whatever the reason behind this, this only makes us crave maruya more!
