‘Disney on Ice’ 2018 pays tribute to Mickey Mouse, celebrates new stories ‘Moana,’ ‘Inside Out’

Disney is practically synonymous with childhood, whether you’re from the United States or the Philippines.

The spectacle of “Disney on Ice” for children and those who are kids-at-heart is seeing favorite characters and stories to come to life, made even more magical with figure skating dances and tricks during the holiday season.

With performances that date back to 1981, how does the ice show stay fresh and relevant with each new generation?

For this year, the show is themed “Disney on Ice presents Mickey’s Super celebration” to mark 90 years of the beloved and iconic Mickey Mouse.

The show will take a trip back to memory lane with a modern rendition of the 1928 short film “Steamboat Willie” and the surreal 1940 film “Fantasia.”

Newer films that have earned a special place among younger audiences for their captivating stories are “Moana,” “Frozen” and “Inside Out.” The last, which will feature the Emotions Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust is particularly special for Filipino audiences as it will be its debut on “Disney on Ice.”

During a press conference last Nov. 20 at Mall of Asia, a preview was given of some of the stunning choreography that audiences will be treated to.

Aside from new stories in the show, there will be more breath-taking tricks, particularly aerial circus acts which required extra training for the skaters. Many of the performers have over a decade of competitive experience under their belts and took eight weeks to perfect the choreography—a testament to the dedication they have for audiences to not only be entertained but to also take home lasting memories.
