AWIT AWARDS, the music industry’s longest-running music awards, will be is marking 31st awards night this Sunday, October 14, 2018, at the New Frontier Theater (formerly Kia Theater) in Cubao, Quezon City.
It is expected to be another star-studded night, as the country’s leading music artists vie for prestigious awards in 27 categories, including performance and technical awards and major awards, namely, “Album of the Year,” “Record of the Year,” and “Song of the Year.” Winners in another 10 categories under “People’s Voice” Awards, voted upon by fans earlier this year, will also be announced during the event.
Last year, the top awards were won by Quest, who won “Album of the Year,”Inigo Pascual, whose song “Dahil Sa ‘Yo” won “Song of the Year,”and Darren Espanto, who, among others, dominated the “People’s Voice” categories.
This year promises to be very interesting as winners in the most hotly-contested categories are revealed.
Among the nominees are Darren Espanto, Moira, James Reid, and Jona. Husband and wife tandem Ogie Alcasid and Regine Velasquez are nominated separately for Best Performance by a Male Artist and Best Performance by a Female Artist, respectively. Top bands IV or Spades and Ben & Ben are nominated for Best Performance by a Group, alongside veteran band True Faith.
Nominated for “Album of the Year” are the albums of Jona, Regine Velasquez, KZ Tandingan, Gloc-9 and James Reid, while TJ Monterde, KZ Tangdingan, Moira dela Torre, Christian Bautista, and IV of Spades are nominated for “Record of the Year.”
On the other hand, the songs “Mahika,” “Labo,” “Titibo-tibo,” “Kapit,” and “Hey Barbara” are nominated for “Song of the Year.”
The 1970’s band, Cinderella, will be this year’s “Dangal ng Musika” honoree.
Known as the local counter part of the Grammy Awards, Awit Awards has had an impressive record of honoring OPM’s best and brightest, giving out over 840 awards in its 30-year history. It also recognizes the people behind the production and creation of OPM, such as composers, music producers, music arrangers, vocal arrangers, record engineers and graphic artists.
Awit Awards winners are chosen by music industry personalities and professionals, such as producers, radio DJs, music video directors, graphic artists, They are judged based on set standards of excellence.
