Joey Ayala, a legend in the Filipino music industry, is set to return to the Music Museum stage on September 16, 2017. The folk icon who brought us songs like Karaniwang Tao, Walang Hanggang Paalam, and Bathala will be performing in the same stage where, 25 years ago, he simultaneously released three records: Panganay Ng Umaga, Magkabilaan, and Mga Awit ng Tanod-lupa.
The concert entitled “Mandiriwa” will feature more local icons performing Joey Ayala’s songs. Gloc-9, Bayang Barrios, Dong Abay, Bullet Dumas, Juan Miguel Severo, and the Ang Bagong Lumad band are all set to perform along with the singer-songwriter. It will be a night of music dedicated to the struggles and collective memory of the Filipino people, with Joey Ayala’s signature blend of ethnic and alternative music.
During the press conference held last July 12, 2017 at the Conspiracy Bar in Quezon City, a joint where he usually performs, Joey Ayala told the media that he is also planning to use the concert as a workshop for the audience where they will explore capacity-building learning methods that incorporate songwriting and mind-mapping.
When asked about what “Mandiriwa” means, Joey Ayala explained that it is something he made up to be a Tagalog word for “artist”. He further discussed how the Filipino language does not really have an all-encompassing word for “artist”, but rather, we have specialized terms for the different kinds: pintor, musikero, iskultor, etc. “Mandiriwa” is the combination of the prefix “mang-” (i.e. mangingisda) which denotes a person who makes or creates, and “diwa”, or “essence”.
Mandiriwa is the fifth of the many planned shows by Vandals Entertainment and Gabi Na Naman Productions that aim to give homegrown acts an opportunity to make history and be part of something big. It’s the partner productions’ fifth concert offering following the sold-out success of Damá at the Music Museum featuring Ebe Dancel, Johnoy Danao, and Bullet Dumas; Damá: The Repeat featuring the same set of artists; Secrets: #AiaBarbieKitchie Live at the Music Museum; and Secrets: The Repeat featuring the same set of artists.
