The French-language film, ‘Jeanne du Barry,’ received a seven-minute standing ovation at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 17, which made its cast emotional.
Johnny Depp, who is part of the cast, was seen getting teary-eyed in the video posted by Variety’s Co-Editor-in-Chief, Ramin Setoodeh, with the caption “Johnny Depp tears up as #Cannes2023 showers him with a seven-minute standing ovation at the premiere of ‘Jeanne du Barry.”

In the video, Depp tried to cover his face before waving to the crowd.
Director and co-star Maïwenn, also broke out into tears as she momentarily took the microphone. “I want to share this moment with my lover, with my producer, with Le Pacte,” she said.
She added, “It was a production that was difficult to finance, and I want to share this moment with all my team across the theater.”
‘Jeanne du Barry’ is a period biographical film about Jeanne du Barry, or Madame du Barry, who uses her intelligence and allure to climb the social ladder of 1700s France. The movie’s logline reads: “Jeanne (Maïwenn), a working-class woman determined to climb the social ladder, uses her charms to escape her impoverished condition. She becomes the favorite of King Louis XV (Depp) who, unaware of her status as a courtesan, regains through her his appetite for life. They fall madly in love. Against all propriety and etiquette, Jeanne moves to Versailles, where her arrival scandalizes the court.”
Other cast members starring in the film are Benjamin Lavernhe, Pierre Richard, Melvil Poupad, Pascal Greggory, and India Hair, among many others.
The film was chosen to open the festival, facing a lot of criticism at the time because of Depp’s attendance after his highly publicized trial with Amber Heard.
However, Depp was proclaimed innocent as the jury determined that Heard defamed him on all three counts.
