Recently, the whole country was shocked by the news of the death of local showbiz’s “La Primera Contravida,” Cherie Gil last Friday, August 5. The veteran actress died of a rare form of endometrial cancer.
Gil, whose real name was Evangeline Rose Eigenmann, was born to the Eigenmann family, who are known for having been in showbiz for several years, so it’s no wonder that she started acting at a young age. She is famous for her antagonist role as Lavinia Arguelles in Bituing Walang Ningning, with her famous line, “You’re nothing but a second rate, trying hard copycat!” From then on, she took on more villain roles with class and more sophisticated touch.

Manila by Night (1980)
Directed by the great Ishmael Bernal, this 80s multi-narrative masterpiece talks about the harsh reality of living in the city and the struggles of making ends meet. The film delves into topics of prostitution, unemployment, and drug addiction.
Problem Child (1980)
Described by the late actress as the movie that “was too close to home” in an interview, the movie revolves around Sylvia, a middle-aged socialite who is the center of Manila’s gossip circles as she continues with the life of public separation from her strings of lovers.
Too Young (1990)
The late actress starred alongside with Aiko Melendez, Zoren Legaspi, and Nida Blanca. Also known by the title Trese, it follows the story of a young girl whose life is changed forever after her father makes the decision to testify against a syndicate.
Sugatang Puso (2000)
Bagged her Best Supporting Award in the 2000 Metro Manila Film Festival, the drama revolves around the couple, Noel and Gina taking in Eric– Noel’s reckless son from a previous marriage.
Sonata(2013)
Directed by Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes, Regine Cadena values her life as art but went into self-exile as she no longer sees herself as such, but a daring young boy brought it all back. Fun fact, the actress was also the film’s producer!
With these films, it is no doubt that the La Primera Contravida showcased her sublime acting prowess through the years. At the height of the pandemic, she held an online masterclass for aspiring actors in which she shared her creative experiences in acting. The proceeds went to Save Our Schools Network– a non-governmental organization that is vocal about children’s right to education.
Rest in peace, Ms. Cherie. You will be missed but your legacy and memory will remain in our hearts forever.
