Easter may be over, but for Jo Koy, it’s just getting started as he returns home and brings his family together amidst the drama for Easter Sunday, his forthcoming family comedy film.
On May 5, Universal Pictures released the official trailer for Jo Koy’s comedy flick Easter Sunday, giving the audience a first glimpse of his character’s family antics.
The almost 3-minute clip sees Joseph (Jo Koy) return to his home with his son, Junior (Brandon Wardell), for an Easter celebration with his “riotous, bickering, eating, drinking, laughing, loving family.” “Easter Sunday is like the Filipino Super Bowl,” Joseph tells his son.
But upon their arrival, Joseph finds out that his mother, Susan, and his aunt, Tita Theresa, are in the middle of a war with each other, and it’s his mission to keep the family together before the holiday celebration.
The trailer then shows clips of some family moments where they are packing gifts in a balikbayan box, singing karaoke, and having Manny Pacquiao’s birthday as their ATM PIN.
“Moments like these are few and far between. Let’s enjoy it,” Joseph says.
Easter Sunday is a love letter from Jo Koy to his Filipino-American community. It’s also the first film to feature an all-Filipino main cast, which includes Jo Koy, who stars as Joseph, Tia Carrere as Tita Theresa, Eva Noblezada as Ruth, Lydia Gaston as Susan, Rodney To as Tito Arthur, and Eugene Cordero as himself.

Joining the film’s comedic cast are Jimmy O. Yang, Wardell, Rodney To, Jay Chandrasekhar, Asif Ali, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Tiffany Haddish, who will play Vanessa, Joseph’s old flame.
Easter Sunday is helmed by Super Troopers director Chandrasekhar, with a screenplay penned by writer Ken Cheng. The feature film is produced by The Lego Movie franchise producer Dan Lin and Aladdin producer Jonathan Eirich.
In a previous interview with Inquirer, Jo Koy has revealed that he has a movie deal offer from Amblin, Steven Spielberg’s production company. He then, later on, shared that the upcoming film, Easter Sunday, which was in development at the time, would focus on “a Filipino family during that special holiday.”
“[A]nd, of course, it’s going to be very diverse and will feature a majority of Filipinos in the cast. One of the executive producers is Dan Lin, so we’ve got a powerhouse team behind us, and we’re writing it as we speak. And working with Spielberg and Amblin has been amazing,” the comedian said.
