The mega star will be working with Filipino-Canadian Martin Edralin who is set to direct the film, and Babae at Baril director Rae Red who will adapt the novel for a screenplay.
The movie is an adaptation of the award-winning novel with the same name The Mango Bride penned by Marivi Soliven, a Filipina author who is based in the US. It has also triumphed with a literary prize in the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards.
The book’s premise follows the interconnected existence of two Filipino women, Beverly and Amparo, who migrated in the United States where they both discover and recognize how their lives and stories entwine with one another.
“I wanted to do The Mango Bride because it’s the best way to connect to a global audience by putting some of the best Filipino talents and stories together to tell an emotional and uplifting story like this. I have long been a fan of Marivi Soliven’s writing, from Suddenly Stateside, her collection of light essays about living in the U.S., to The Mango Bride. She captures the Filipino migrant and Filipino American experience skilfully.” Cuneta stated.
The acclaimed actress will also be one of the executive producers for the full-length film which is ought to be distributed by 108 media and BOLD MP.
The Mango Bride will proceed with the production in late 2022.
Cuneta also landed a role in another upcoming US series Concepcion: A Crime Family Drama this month and is said to play a “major role” in the series.
