BayaniJUAN Spirit amidst COVID-19: Youth-led organization launches projects to aid the Filipino youth

BiyayaNiJuan: Helping Filipinos ‘Juan’ at a time

In the occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the gap between the youth and achieving quality education has widened. Access to education has been limited, as multiple factors affect the disadvantaged Filipinos. The pandemic has already caused the loss of jobs, business closures, and the inability to financially pursue online education. The cost of availing online education has become a hindrance in acquiring education and other opportunities to develop skills for students. This concern needs an immediate response, thus the organization’s initiative in serving these students by establishing BiyayaNiJuan with three advocacy-based projects: #ProjectTALA (education)¸ #ProjectKiloMetro (KM / Kindness for Mankind) (Donation Drives), and #ProjectTAYO (Volunteering)onAugust 24 – 28, 2020.

Derived from the term bayanihan— a Filipino term where a community helps each other to accomplish a certain task— BiyayaNiJuan shares the same sentiment as it launches its three main advocacy-based projects. It is the organization’s belief that education should be accessible to everyone, thus Project #JuanTALA (Tuition Assistance for Learning Advantage) will be launched to provide financial aid to underprivileged students to help in their education. Due to the constraints caused by the pandemic, a shift to virtual learning has been implemented, wherein an internet connection and gadgets have become necessary for online learning. BiyayaNiJuan aims to unite everyone towards achieving the goal of ensuring equal access to education for everybody through Project #JuanKilometro (KM – Kindness for Mankind Donation Drive); this project seeks to provide the necessities for e-learning to several deserving students. Aside from having quality and accessible education, the youth also deserve the chance to expand their horizons. BiyayaNiJuan’s volunteering project, Project #JuanTAYO (Training Activities and Youth Opportunities), will provide opportunities for the youth to develop their skills and abilities through volunteering and taking part in the organization’s advocacies.

BiyayaNiJuan will also be hosting a 4-day webinar called JUANder Series.” on August 24 – 28, 2020. With the theme, “STEP Juan: Shaping the Education Path of Juan”. To understand the ‘new normal’, or to know more about efforts that everyone can do to help those struggling to adapt to the current reality. Various guest speakers such as Mark Averilla, a social media influencer known as Macoy Dubs, who is also an educator. Dr. Gia Sison, medical doctor and a mental health advocate, and other professionals who have taken the time to share their knowledge about education, donating, volunteering/leadership, and health.

The youth-led organization is devoted to creating a better future for the Filipinos by aiding the youth through its different advocacies and projects.
