The spread of the coronavirus prompted the world into a full lockdown, forcing everyone to stay at home. Because of this, many people have reached a whole new level of boredom as they try to find new ways to entertain themselves. Some have gotten into video gaming, cooking new recipes, reading a book, or watching their favorite movies and shows. And among the latest obsessions of these home-bound individuals is Japanese television, particularly Toei Tokusatsu World.
If you are already a fan of Japanese media, then you’ve probably heard about the worldwide launch of Toei Tokusatsu World‘s YouTube channel. For newbies, however, here’s what you need to know: Tokusatsu means special effects in English. While in Japan, the word is associated with the filming company famous for its techniques in using life-sized heroes, CG, miniatures, and costumes that started in the 1950s.
One of its popular TV series includes Super Sentai, Kamen Rider (a.k.a. Masked Rider), and ZYURANGER, which was adopted in America as “Power Rangers”. Last March 19, the Tokyo-based company announced that they will be streaming shows from the 1960s to 1990s starting April 6, 2020.
According to the company, there will be viewing restrictions on some countries and regions.
There will also be 70 different shows to be released with English subtitles on the first two episodes–the succeeding episodes will feature the Japanese language. Nevertheless, the film company assures viewers that they might update the shows with subtitles in any language.
