A few days ago, the World Health Organization said that Italy is now the “epicenter” of the coronavirus pandemic as the number of confirmed cases continues to rise overnight. So, as a way to combat the spread of the virus, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte implemented stricter measures and put the whole nation under a total lockdown.
Since then, the nationwide lockdown has caused drastic changes in some cities—most especially in Venice, the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region. The city, which is known for its many canals and bridges, usually deals with a massive tourist flow, with more than 20 million visitors each year. But with the ongoing pandemic, iconic canals (where the famous gondolas can be seen) are starting to clear up. In fact, fishes, swans, and even dolphins were spotted swimming through the now-translucent waters.
In a Facebook group called VENEZIA PULITA (Clean Venice), people have been sharing photos of what Venice looks like now while the whole nation is on lockdown.
While the country is currently dealing with an infectious disease, some things are looking up in Italy. Here’s to hoping that it continues to get better even after the pandemic.
