‘ALAB’: A fashion show on plastic pollution awareness

Bye Bye Plastic Bags – Philippines (BBPB-PH) is a global non-profit organization created and driven by the youth that advocates against the use of single-use plastics, and environmental protection. BBPB-PH is an organization under TAYO, a change agency that aims to promote sustainability through creative strategies, & various advocacies that carry the spirit of Bayanihan. TAYO is composed of various initiatives and organizations that stand for change, starting with the Filipinos – Kids for Kids, Bye Bye Plastic Bags, Kamalayan, and Habilin.

ALAB 2020 is Bye Bye Plastic Bags Philippines’ first event since it was founded in the country. It is a fashion show that aims to raise awareness on plastic pollution and how it affects the most vulnerable sectors. It is easy for those who are more privileged to turn a blind eye towards the plastic crisis because they do not personally feel affected by it, but there are millions of other Filipinos who are. Plastic waste continues to accumulate as garbage disposal methods and proper facilities are not improved. Nearby communities suffer, health risks rise, and poorer families are vulnerable in times of natural calamity. There is so much more to the plastic crisis than we know, but there is still time to prevent it from causing any more harm.

The event aims to creatively stimulate a discussion about the problems of pollution and apathy to the ones who have the means to make change. Plastic pollution is not caused by the poor. Everybody is held accountable and that is something the show hopes to relay to the audience. There will also be guest speakers who will be sharing their individual journeys into becoming environmental advocates and how the rest of us can do our part for the earth.

The pieces that will be showcased in the show are made from upcycled fabric, old clothing, and reused plastic to ensure that production will be zero-waste. More than a fashion show, ALAB 2020 is a story. It is a story of how our environment was, how it is now, and how it will turn out to be, but the ending will be ours to write. Catch ALAB 2020 on January 25, 2020 at The Gallery, ASPACE Makati and get your early bird tickets here for only P300! https://bit.ly/ALAB-Tickets
