In an effort to create a more sustainable environment, Starbucks has decided to eliminate plastic straws globally by the year 2020.
The food and beverage company will be replacing the plastic straws with reusable lids and alternative straws made from paper or compostable plastic for blended beverages. According to the company’s press release, they aim “to make such a global commitment, [and to] eliminate more than one billion plastic straws per year from Starbucks stores.”
The lid is already available in over 8,000 Starbucks stores in the U.S. and Canada, and is currently being tested in other stores in China, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
“For our partners and customers, this is a significant milestone to achieve our global aspiration of sustainable coffee, served to our customers in more sustainable ways,” said Kevin Johnson, president of Starbucks.
A global banning of straws will also follow, beginning in Europe, specifically in select stores in France, Netherlands, and the UK. InqPOP!/Bea Constantino
