‘Game of Thrones’ star Iain Glen joins PH historical film ‘Quezon’

‘Game of Thrones’ star Iain Glen is set to join the Philippine historical film ‘Quezon.’

Iain Glen, the veteran actor of HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” will portray Governor General Leonard Wood, a U.S. Army major who served in the Philippines from 1921-1927, for TBA Studios’ historical biopic “Quezon,” as per Hong Kong FilMart. Glen’s role as Wood shows his instrumental part in Manuel Quezon’s quest for the Philippines’ independence from the U.S.

The film is to be directed and co-written by Jerrold Tarog who has done similar works on genres falling under Filipino historical screenplays, namely, his very own “Goyo: The Boy General,” and “Heneral Luna.” Tarog similarly follows the storytelling process from his previous works for Quezon in covering the life of Manuel L. Quezon. The film will particularly portray his role as a lawyer, soldier, and president of the Commonwealth of the Philippines from 1935 to 1944.

Alongside Glen would be popular nationwide Filipino talents: Jericho Rosales, who is to play Quezon, Mon Confiado, Benjamin Alves, Karylle Yuzon, Romnick Sarmenta, J.C. Santos, and Cris Villanueva. The script reading had taken place at the Manila Hotel where all cast and crew were present for the meeting and formally met each other.

The veteran actor has definitely made this project more exciting in its pursuit, leaving reporters with candid moments from Tarog where he shared that Glen made the film “much more alive.”

TBA Studios’ president and COO Daphne O. Chiu additionally noted, “We are very honored to have Iain Glen in ‘Quezon.’ This film is shaping up to be one of the biggest productions in Philippine cinema, with one of the largest casts ever assembled. We are excited to share with Iain — and the rest of the world — the production scale and level of artistry that Filipino filmmakers are capable of.”

While the film is set for production this March 2025, the screenplay has already managed to secure support from notable local agencies such as the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) and the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP). While FDCP was also reported to be providing funds, additional backing is said to come from the Department of Tourism and the QCinema Film Foundation.
