‘Too freaky?’ Fans share mixed reactions to Freakier Friday sequel after trailer drop

The iconic 2003 Disney hit movie “Freaky Friday” is set to release its sequel on August 8, 2025, and is said to be even more peculiar, as hinted by its title: “Freakier Friday.”

The original mother-daughter duo, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, return to navigate the challenges of switching bodies once again—this time alongside familiar faces from the first film and new cast members, bringing the story to life 20 years later.

The trailer was released on March 15, gaining significant traction online after two years of anticipation from fans, following The Hollywood Reporter’s confirmation of a “Freaky Friday” sequel last May 2023. “Freakier Friday” follows Anna (Lindsay Lohan) as a mother to her teenage daughter, Harper (Julia Butters), and a stepmother to Lilly Davies (Sophia Hammons) after her engagement to British restaurateur Eric Davis, played by Manny Jacinto.

The out-of-body experience recurs after Anna and her mom visit a hand reader who eerily reminds them of their past where they were swapped in each other’s bodies and states, “You learned a lesson– a lesson that may serve you again.” The two quickly step out of the session, evidently anxious from its specificity, and wake up the next day to the same fate they found themselves in years ago, except this time, Anna’s children are affected in the interchange leaving the 4 female characters to “navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge.”

While many expressed excitement over the initial confirmation of the sequel’s production, with millions of viewers checking out teasers and trailers, the main takeaway from their reactions seems to be that the plot has changed too much, straying from its authentic comedic roots. Some users noted that the storyline felt “forced,” also predicting the character arcs and the potential disappointment that reboots have often left viewers feeling.

Despite the noticeable trend in these sentiments, other social media users remained optimistic about the sequel and shared their excitement for what may be with Anna and her high-school fling Jake, pointing out Chad Michael Murray’s return as the heartthrob of the “freaky universe,” while being with new love interest, Manny Jacinto.

With the trailer’s fresh release, viewers can only countdown to August for Freakier Friday’s premiere before sharing their final verdict on the new storyline. Nevertheless, we can’t wait to get another comeback with Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis appearing together on-screen again…interchangeably.
