A man burst into tears of joy after reuniting with his rescue dog, Oreo, who he thought was lost after the catastrophic Pacific Palisades fire.
On January 11, Liz Kreutz of NBC News posted on Instagram that Casey Colvin, a resident of the Pacific Palisades, where the biggest wildfire in Southern California is present just 11% contained, was looking for his two dogs.
Kreutz said that she met Colvin on the first day of the fire and “he was in distress trying to get back to his home in the Palisades to get his two dogs, Oreo and Tika Tika Tika.”
She explained on X (formerly Twitter) that Colvin was “desperately trying to get back home to them” because he wasn’t there when the evacuation order was issued.
In order to see if Colvin could get his dogs back, Kreutz stated that a firefighter went to his residence and spoke with him. The firefighter then returned with one dog, Tika Tika Tika, claiming that Oreo had fled the house and was nowhere to be found.
Colvin’s friend saw the dog in the neighborhood after Oreo got away and snapped a photo of it. Kreutz shared a video of the heartbreaking interview with the emotional dog owner and a flyer that Colvin made for Oreo.
He stated that he was using an AirTag he had for Oreo to try to locate him in another video while holding Tika Tika Tika close to his chest.
Colvin stated that Oreo had been spotted twice, and once “he was seen sleeping in the rubble of a neighbor’s home.” He visited his burned-out home and left food and water in case Oreo returned, and he also chose to work with a professional dog trapper, according to an update Kreutz posted on January 12.
His efforts paid off a few hours later. Kreutz posted a heartfelt video of Colvin calling for Oreo, who dashed under a fence and down a hill before being embraced by his owner.
Colvin cried as he punched his fist in the air and clutched the dog. He kept cheering and playing with the pup.
“We rushed to his street where Oreo was hiding in his neighbor’s home. The moment he saw Casey he came running,” Kreutz stated. “An incredible moment and bright spot in such a devastating time.”
