Universities around the University Belt (U-belt) in Manila are known for their intriguing histories, whether rooted in actual events or captivating tales about the schools.
However, certain stories resonate with students at the universities around the U-belt—narratives that send shivers down the spine and trigger goosebumps for both those who hear them and those who experience them.
Here is a list of spooky horror encounters shared personally and online by students and staff from universities around the U-belt that evoke chills and give cold creeps:
University of Santo Tomas (UST)
Whenever we hear UST, aside from associating it with the color yellow and its famous tiger representation, we also can not remove the spooky horror stories that it entails.
As one of the oldest universities in the Philippines, UST holds a reputation for students having ghostly encounters on campus. Who could forget the infamous ‘Ole Ole’ story that happened in the Main Building of the Campus?

But, aside from the creepy stories in the main building, there are also scary encounters that loom in other parts of the university.
In Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building (BGPOP), located on the P. Noval side of the campus, a student encountered a shivering experience.
It was around 8 PM when she and her friend decided to stick around on the 11th floor of the building after her class.
What seemed to be a peaceful and quiet night turned out to be a night that spooked her and her friend to the extent of leaving the campus.
They heard knocking on the huge glass windows, not once, but twice. Even though she wanted to shrug it off, she just couldn’t and decided that it was best to scurvy along just in case something more eerie happened.
She said it might be a staff from the building, but at that late at night, who knows?
Far Eastern University
In the neighboring streets of UST, the Far Eastern University also shares a variety of horror stories.
There is an urban legend that looms on the corners of its campus— one being the case of the ghost that roams around the education building of the university.
The tale starts with the professor who took her own life inside the campus, and according to stories, she haunts the halls of the building.
While this story sticks as a famous telltale in the university, there are also other buildings where students encounter eerie events.
One student had a night class in the engineering building (the former hospital of the university) when she experienced something unexpected to happen.
At around 7:30 PM, a student decided to go to the comfort room of the building after their class and told her friends not to wait for her.
By the time she was done, she went out and thought she saw one of her friends go inside the room where they just had a class.
“I saw the door swing open and close and I knew that it really saw the bag and the back of my friend. So, I thought, maybe they waited for me inside the room. I went there, and when I opened the door, the room was empty. I’d be less weirded out if it’s someone from the next class (if there was one). But, there was no one, the room was empty. I even checked other rooms to make sure, but it was all empty,” she said.
Before her encounter, she had heard stories about the ghost of ‘Maningning,’ the professor from the urban legend of the university.
University of the East (UE)
The University of the East, another university along the U-belt, also has a fair share of spooky stories that happen on campus.
A student was waiting alone on a friend in one of the classrooms on the third floor of the education building on campus at around 8 PM.
Confusion hit her when she heard a voice greet “good morning” as she was alone in the room, and if someone had entered, she would definitely know.
Another heart-racing phrase echoed in the four corners of the room making her afraid of tilting her head up, scared of what she may see.
“The young lady at the back, read one paragraph from page 26,” the random voice said.
As she tilted her head up, she locked her eyes with an unusually tall old man. As it walked away, she realized why she deemed the man unusually tall. The feet of the man weren’t lying flat on the floor; it was floating, and the man just went through the wall.
Centro Escolar University (CEU)
At a neighboring university of UE, students from CEU also shared a variety of spooky experiences on campus.
A freshman was startled when their room was full of female students, unconsciously observing them and eavesdropping, she realized her classmates were speaking in a different language — Spanish and their uniforms looked dated.
Out of confusion, she went outside, where she bumped into a professor, she told the professor that she thought she was lost as she was weirded out by her classmates, however, the professor said that she wasn’t with anyone in the room.
The student’s confusion grew bigger when she realized that there was no one in the room, the professor told her that maybe her room was right, but the period in time was wrong.
Arellano University
We always hear about student encounters when it comes to spooky stories around universities, but there are also experiences by the staff of some universities.
The story happened at around 6 AM on a Thursday. A security guard was roaming around the grounds of Arellano University when he suddenly felt a weird breeze that he just shrugged off.
When he reached the faculty room, he heard sobs from inside, he then heard the fan open and became stronger. The stronger the fan got, the louder the sobs were getting inside the faculty room.
The guard was plastered with fear and ran outside the building, and from then on it was said that there were tons of stories where voices could be heard inside the faculty room before 6 AM.
These stories are just a fraction of the encounters that students and staff around the university belt.
Tons of these kinds of personal stories are also published on various social media platforms, sharing eerie encounters in the universities.
