Viral ‘frantic dancing grandma’ sparks new meme format for hilarious and relatable moments

A video of a frantically dancing grandma on TikTok has been trending over the past few days, quickly becoming a meme with various funny contexts.

The original video, posted by creator @the_devonmaid, has garnered 3.7 million views. In the video, the grandma moves around in a playful manner with the caption, “POV: Grandma when you ask her to play hide and seek.”

This video birthed a trend where users apply the same concept to situations where they are unsure of what to do. Filipino social media users, who are of course, always online, are now having a blast creating and sharing their own versions.

In one TikTok video, users related the grandma’s dance to the dilemma of having a large circle of friends and not knowing who to hang out with because of potential jealousy. The video has made many people laugh, with some even tagging their friends in the comments section.

@liftycuir pero ha sobrang nakaka pressure ‘to. Please ‘wag kayo agad mag seselos kapag may ibang cof na kasama yung iba nyong kaibigan lalo na kung parati nyo sya kasama. #cof #fyp #stop ♬ original sound – I Green Screen Things

Another user applied the video to the situation where a friend asks where you are, and you reply that you’re inside a jeep. When the friend urges you to hurry, you’re left feeling helpless because you’re not driving and can’t control the traffic. This scenario sparked more conversation and laughter among TikTok users.

@..using.this.username manong tabi ako na magdrive, bilisan ko daw hahahahaha . . . . . . . . . #CapCut #pov #povs #schoolmoments #jeep #funny #fyp ♬ original sound – I Green Screen Things

Others related the video to situations where you’re hosting a gathering at your house, and friends keep making requests—such as asking where the spoon is, complaining about a lack of chairs, needing ice, or saying there are no more drinks—leaving you confused about what to address first. Many people found this relatable and joined in the fun.

And of course, Filipinos cannot skip this one. Given the trending “flatline” and “CPR” queen, they also related the meme to the problematic and unethical behavior of these “medical influencers.”

@thisisadump7 Sinetch itey? Life is so short daw pero mas short pasensiya namin sayo teh. #Flatlinequeen ♬ original sound – I Green Screen Things

Filipinos never seem to run out of creative ideas, and more and more witty content using the grandma’s video has been posted.

The original creator of the video posted her reaction on TikTok upon seeing her video go viral and become a meme. She expressed her shock and appreciation for the support, and rather than feeling upset, she embraced the trend by creating her own version of the video with the text, “Pov: When you find out you are a meme all over the social media & don’t know where to laugh, cry, hide, show off, die of embarrassment or embrace it!”
