Medical intern performing patient CPR while recording video content leads to new outcry

At this point, we think that this is getting out of hand. We’re discovering more and more creators blurring the lines between their personal and professional lives online.

In the wake of the recent scandal involving a student nurse dubbed the “Flatline Queen” for filming sensitive content inside a hospital, another TikTok video has stirred controversy by showcasing questionable practices by an intern at a public hospital in Pasig.

The now-deleted TikTok video intended to offer a glimpse into the life of a medical intern has quickly become a topic of heated discussion online. The clip posted last June 14, features the intern, who recently graduated, performing CPR while recording. This then raised serious ethical concerns, considering that people have been talking about medical professionals’ ethics nowadays. Despite attempts to blur the patient’s face, the video still reveals part of the patient’s identity during an intubation procedure.

A licensed doctor then took to social media to condemn this ‘unethical’ act.

Additionally, another video was uploaded, featuring a clip of a confidential document with the text “Penmanship reveal,” with a matching sparkle emoji. This raises further concerns about patient confidentiality and the inappropriate sharing of sensitive information.

This led to an outpouring of disappointment from social media users, who expressed their frustration over the inappropriate content and breach of privacy.

One user expressed their concern, saying, “Dati nakakatakot magpaospital dahil sa bayarin, ngayon nakakatakot dahil pa rin sa bayarin pati na rin kasi baka gawin ka lang content [Before, it was scary to go to the hospital because of the costs. Now, it’s also scary because you might just become content for social media.]”

“If your first action during a medical emergency is to bring out your phone to make content (other than this being entirely unethical), you really have to reconsider your priorities in life,” another user added.

Others also called out the interns for creating “day in the life” vlogs for clout, stating, “Pwede ba sa mga medical interns dyan, tigilan nyo yang kaka vlog nyo ng “day in a life” eklabu at tutukan nyo nalang yang duty nyo??? Di aesthetic ang ospital potangina, buhay ng tao ang nakasalalay dyan. Tigilan nyo yang pagcaclout nyo [To all the medical interns out there, stop with the ‘day in the life’ vlogs and focus on your responsibilities. Hospitals aren’t for showing off; human lives are at stake. Quit doing it for clout.]”

The TikTok video has since been removed, and there has been no statement from the creator as of yet.

This incident highlights a problematic trend where the boundaries of professionalism and ethics are being crossed for the sake of social media fame. The fact that such videos continue to surface despite guidelines is alarming and worrying.

It’s crucial for everyone, especially those in healthcare, to remember that patient care and confidentiality should always come first, rather than simply doing things for clout and aesthetic appeal. Maybe it’s time to consider having guidelines when it comes to releasing content like this.

As of this writing, the content creator has yet to respond to the issue.
