‘Otaku’ fights attacker at Taichung MRT, cites anime character ‘Himmel’ as inspiration

On May 21, Hung, 20, was reported to have stabbed two passengers near the Taichung Metro and was stopped by 17 passengers.

Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen recognized the heroic efforts of the passengers and awarded them NT$5,000 (approximately Php 9,000) to NT$20,000 (approximately 36,000) plus a free lifetime pass in boarding the Taichung MRT. In the 9 out of 17 passengers who have attended the award ceremony, one of the attendees showed up dressed up as a character from the video game ‘Monster Hunter.’

Hsu Jui-hsien or “long-haired brother” because of his long hair he often puts into a ponytail proudly presented himself as an Otaku upon receiving the award. The Japanese word ‘Otaku’ is used to describe a person who has strong interests on anime, manga, and computer games.

Upon acceptance of his award, he quoted a line from a Japanese manga and anime series Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.”

“If Himmel was there, he would’ve done the same thing,” Hsu said.

Himmel is a swordsman who possesses great speed and spider-like senses. In the manga and series, he faces strong villains and defeats the Demon King.

He also said, “Otakus aren’t as bad as everyone thinks. Don’t stereotype.”

He mentioned that Otakus has become heavily criticized because of the stigma laid upon a student obsessed with violent video games who was involved in the 2014 Taipei Metro attack.

Many people were moved by the heroism of the passengers and appreciated the ideals that Hsu showed.

“I hope the animator would do a short video of Himmel recognizing his heroic action. that would be awesome,” a Facebook user said.

“This also proves (kinda) that what you watch can actually influence your actions in real life. Especially if it deeply touched you, it could amplify your passion for some stuff. This guy knew what he’s doing was dangerous but did it otherwise,” another responder commented.

“So those who enjoy nasty stuff, like NTRs, extreme violence, grape, etc., I’m worried for you bros. Better keep your emotions in check so you won’t end up actually doing those stuff irl or you’ll be facing some serious consequences. ☠️” he added.

“The true definition of life imitates art,” another said.

However, Hsu remained firm with his then decision, saying, “If time could be rewound, I would make the same choice again.”
