Actress Anna Akana visits the Philippines, surprises fans about being part-Filipino

Fans are hollering as American actress Anna Akana came to Manila for a visit, and that’s not the only reason they’re excited.

The “Ant-Man” actress posted a Facebook reel on November 23, 2023, documenting her roaming around Manila with her family before ending up at a famous coffee shop chain in a mall. Along with the excited cheers welcoming her to the country, a look at the comment section reveals her fans’ disbelief over her lineage.

The majority of them seemed to be surprised that the musician was actually of Filipino descent, some of them even going as far as saying that they originally thought she was pure Japanese.

The voice actress has been a prolific media producer since she was nineteen, performing stand-up comedy. Unfortunately, Anna experienced panic attacks due to performing, leading her to switch from stand-up to YouTube and online content creation. She created videos for her own personal channel, produced short films and documentaries, and posted comedic music with her duo, “Cat Benatar.” She has since become an advocate for comedy and mental health.

Along with her YouTube Channel, she also produced and starred on content for YouTube Red, such as “Youth and Consequences,” a comedy-drama web television series released in 2018, her comedy special and short YouTube Documentary called “Laughing Matters” and “Miss Earth,” which was later adapted into “Miss 2059” where it was released on Verizon’s go90 app.

She’s also starred in multiple live-action shows and movies, such as “Shake-it-up,” “Awkward,” “Hello, My Name is Doris” and is a reoccurring member of fellow YouTuber, Ryan Higa’s podcast “Off the Pill,” Netflix’s “Blade of the 47 Ronin” and Comedy Central’s “Corporate.”

Along with this, she has worked in some notable modern animated shows for Disney Channel. Namely “Big City Greens” where she plays the barista Gloria Sato and was a main cast member of “Amphibia” where she played one of the main protagonists, Sasha Waybright, and a guest role on “Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” as Odessa Drake.

Right now, fans have no idea what Anna Akana has planned for her Manila visit, but everyone is excited to see what she will discover and experience in her family’s home country and heritage.
