Armi Millare waxes pensive and starts fresh with her debut solo single ‘Roots’

Singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Armi Millare, one of the Philippines’ most prolific and celebrated music icons of the 21st century, is back. With an impressive body of work under her belt and a reputation as one of the most sought-after live performers of the past decade – Millare has, indeed, consistently earned praise from audiences, pundits, and fellow contemporaries both locally and internationally.

Precisely why both longtime and young music fans are fervently waiting for the drop of her debut single “Roots” on all digital music platforms this October 25th.

Oozing with Millare’s trademark penchant for chilled-out rhythms, pensive lyricism and deft melodic craftsmanship, “Roots” seemingly shies-away from the grandiose and finds her returning, exploring and embracing the present unknown; in short, she is finally back in her artistic element.

Armi Millare for 'Roots'
“I felt within me that things were somewhat transitioning, not knowing the magnitude of it or where things were headed,” Millare explains, when asked about how the proverbial ball of creating new music got rolling. “And the words on ‘Roots’ felt like something I would hear from my older self, telling me how we all got here… I thought about that a lot – and it’s important for me to have a reminder that it has always been equally believing in tradition and [the charm of] pure mystery that got me by.”

Co-produced by Jonny Sjo, Kim Ofstad (of Norweigan neo soul outfit D’Sound fame…) and producer Bernt Rune Stray – who also happens to be the live guitarist and keyboardist of D’Sound – Millare shares that her experience working with the internationally renowned musicians has been nothing but fruitful and the most enjoyable.

“I just love working with them – co-producing the song with Jonny, Kim and Bernt was an experience I am glad I had – we have fostered a great working relationship through the years; I’ve always said a big part of the blueprint of my musicality is related to what they’ve created – so this is merely acting it out, having created this musical dialect together; I’ve learned so much working outside of my comfort zone with them.”

With the release of “Roots,” fans will be pleased to know that a record is in the works, and that Armi is ready to return to the stages as well – this time around, with a more conscious and calculated approach, for both audiences and her own self.

“I just want to keep at it like any musician would: do shows, learn some more, rinse and repeat,” she reveals. “Sometimes, I let the plan come to me and see if it is a fit… I’ll just do the work and see what could be fun for everyone. FIN

Catch Armi perform her first ever solo club show this October 25th at 12 Monkeys Music Hall & Pub at Estancia Mall, Ortigas. For reservations and inquiries contact 0917 570 3222.
