You’ve probably heard or encountered posts with the question “Bakit malungkot ang beshy/beshie ko?” with the emojis of a person doing cartwheel between each word.
This viral caption format on social media has been the reason for the laughter and joy of many Filipinos for a few days now.
The caption and meme format have been used by many people online, with celebrities and online personalities joining in on the trend.
Even actor Jake Ejercito referenced this meme when he shared a screenshot of a conversation with his daughter Ellie with the caption “Ang straightforward ng beshie ko” along with the emojis of a person cartwheeling in between each word.
Aside from Ejercito, another actor who recently joined the trend and has been a source of laughter from many online users is Dennis Trillo. On a TikTok video, the “Maria Clara at Ibarra” actor can be seen cartwheeling and lip-syncing the viral question.

The meme can actually be traced to an episode in the GMA drama anthology “Magpakailanman” that had aired in the past.
The episode, which aired November 2019, presented the story of kids named MJ and Lala who overcame the challenges they faced as gay kids by looking at the bright side of things. The two eventually became popular online because of their talent in gymnastics.
The viral question came from a scene in the episode where MJ shared the news that his father has already accepted him.
The kid later asked his best friend, Lala, why he seemed sad. “Ba’t malungkot ang beshy ko?” MJ asked. “Kasi malungkot ang lola mo,” Lala answered.
It isn’t the first time that a clip from a Philippine TV show has been turned into a meme format. It can be remembered that in 2022, Jodi Sta. Maria’s “Your daughter is sleeping with my husband” meme was all the rage.
As multi-screen media consumption becomes the norm, we’ll see more crossovers from TV to the internet.
