Pop star and singer-songwriter Demi Lovato has spoken up anew about her pronouns in an interview with GQ Hype Spain, where she revealed that she had reverted back to using the she/her pronouns to help people in addressing her.
In the interview, she detailed a part of the reason why she had gone back to those pronouns, saying that she had to “constantly to educate people and explain why [she] identified with those pronouns.” She described the feeling to be “absolutely exhausting” and was one of the reasons why she had started to feel “comfortable with the feminine pronoun.”
The “Skin of my Teeth” singer explained that the exhaustion comes from having to explain to people why she identified as they/them every single day. “For example, in public toilets…I would feel more comfortable in a genderless bathroom. It also happens when filling out forms, such as government documents where you have to specify your gender. You only have two options, male and female, and I feel like none of that makes sense to me,” Lovato said.
Demi Lovato said that she “just got tired,” over the conditioning and the non-stop educating of pronouns but reiterated that it’s for that reason that it is important to continue advocating for gender rights and “the word”.
Back in 2021, Demi Lovato had come out as non-binary and were exclusively using the they/them pronouns following “…a lot of healing [and] self-reflective work.”
Honestly, reading the reason why Demi Lovato had gone back to using ‘she/her’ pronouns makes her feelings absolutely valid, especially for the non-cisgender members of the LGBTQIA+ community. When it comes to explaining why they use certain pronouns not according to their biological sex, LGBTQIA+ members usually get asked questions that can sound like a broken record.
The ”they/them” pronoun is also a bit hard to explain for people who aren’t familiar with it, which can also lead to grammatical arguments like “themself is not a word, it’s themselves” and so on. There are a whole lot of other pronouns out there, with some being confusing.
But, no matter how confusing these pronouns can be when addressing people, please make an effort to learn more about them. Demi Lovato was absolutely real for calling it “exhausting”, because people just don’t seem to understand how important pronouns are for people’s identities. It’s an integral part of actually knowing a person better, and if we all just become better in respecting people, then it probably wouldn’t be so hard.
