‘Welcome to Swift City’: US city temporarily changes its name in honor of Taylor Swift’s ‘The Eras’ tour

Welcome to Swift City! It’s been waiting for you, Swifties!

Have you ever thought of living in a city or town named after your favorite artist? Well, American Swifties were given a chance to experience what it feels like to live in a holy ground because one city in the United States was able to temporarily change its name to Swift City.

On March 14 (Philippine time), the official Twitter account of Glendale City, a city in Arizona, United States of America, announced that it would be temporarily changing its name to “Swift City.”

The city has temporarily changed its name from March 17 to 18 in honor of the multi-award-winning artist Taylor Swift’s tour, “The Eras Tour,” which happened on March 17 at the State Farm Stadium in the same city.

“Glendale, Arizona is so ‘bejeweled’ for [Taylor Swift’s] “The Eras Tour” that we’re renaming the city in her honor,” the official handle of Glendale City wrote in a tweet, accompanied by a poster of Swift’s “The Eras Tour” with the date of the official establishment of Swift City.

This was also officially declared by Glendale City Mayor Jerry P. Weiers during a ceremonial press conference.

“And now therefore, I, Jerry P. Weiers, mayor of the city of Glendale, on behalf of our city council, do hereby proclaim that on March 17 and 18, 2023, the city of Glendale will be renamed Swift City,” he stated.

The mayor even sneaked in a couple of references to Swift’s songs, particularly “You Belong With Me” and “New Romantics,” during his speech.

“And all Swifties are encouraged to share their smiles that could light up this whole town on all the social media platforms because the best people in life are free                                                  ,” he added.

Mayor Weiers even took to Twitter to share the announcement as well.

“What an energy-filled press conference this morning to announce our ceremonial renaming of Glendale City, Arizona to Swift City for March 17-18 in honor of Taylor Swift’s opening her “The Eras Tour” at the State Farm Stadium!” he wrote. “I learned that I have been given the nickname Mayor Swiftie by the Swifties!”

Shortly after the news hit the internet, Swift’s fans were elated and praised the mayor for temporarily changing the city’s name and turning it into their holy ground. Even State Representatives Analise Ortiz and Lupe Contreras were thrilled to welcome the global superstar to the city.

On the other hand, some Swifties also poke fun at the name as they believed they missed the chance to call Glendale “Swiftdale.” Others even suggested to rename the state into “Erazona.”

It’s true that this is Taylor Swift’s world and we’re only living in it.

Swift first announced that she’ll be back on the road again for “The Eras Tour” on November 1, 2022, describing the tour as a “journey through the musical eras of my (past and present) career.”

Swift kicked off her much-anticipated “The Eras Tour” on March 17 at State Farm Stadium, the same venue of the 2023 Super Bowl halftime show where Rihanna performed. Swift will then tour across the U.S. for the first leg of “The Eras Tour.”

Meanwhile, international dates, including the Philippines, are yet to be announced by the singer-songwriter.
