Find out the ‘surprisingly rare’ skill that successful people have, according to a study

There are several skills you have to possess in order for you to get the job that you want. When it comes to hiring people for jobs , smart collaborators are highly desirable candidates. They can give good quality results, get promoted faster, are easily noticed by their superiors, and have more satisfied clients.

The shocking part of all of this is that collaboration skills are surprisingly rare, especially among men.

A McKinsey study published in 2021 found that women leaders, comparing them to men of their same level, were about twice as likely to spend substantial time on collaborative efforts that fell outside their formal job.

There is no easy route in being a collaborator but the goal here is to bring people together in order to solve the problem at hand and learn something new.

Here are some tips in order to be a better collaborator:

Be an inclusive leader

If you have been placed the responsibility of being a leader of a project, you have to take steps to draw different people in together. Getting others’ perspectives is a great way to better solve a problem.

It doesn’t just stop with getting different perspectives. There should also be a representation from different professional backgrounds or expertise, ages and life experiences.

Show appreciation and acknowledgement

Do not disregard the effort of the people you work with. Show your appreciation to them and do not take them for granted.

Ask for help

It’s okay to not know everything. Ask for help when you need it. If you keep yourself on your own terms without proper knowledge, then you would be having a hard time. Reaching out to different experts in a certain topic then it’s most likely that the data you have is compelling.

Crowdsource

Give people a way to learn without having to be part of every team. Communities created online are a great way to start collaborating with others because then you get to exchange ideas.

Share data streams

Make the data accessible to everyone and be useful for specific audiences. Look closely into which data should be shared, and when and how.
