Hollywood, because of its scale and grandness, can have actors from every part of the world vying for any part they can get. The promise of global fame, glitz, and glamor is certainly tempting for anyone who wishes to be on the big screen and that’s exactly what Hollywood gives, but it’s proven to be a lot harder to break through for some people, because Hollywood has problems, too. There have been instances of actors calling out the subtle exclusivity of Hollywood, with roles predominantly going to Caucasians, or American-born, unless the script calls specifically for a certain race. But even then, it’s not even guaranteed, since there have been several scandals of white actors and actresses playing roles of different ethnicity.
But lately, there is a growing audience segment that wants to see more variety in the types of people and characters they see in movies and shows, which has changed Hollywood in the sense that it is now considerably more open and inclusive in casting people of color and orientations. In interviews with Asian American actors and leads, there’s often a section in their back story that details how they all found it difficult to get cast in roles, but now that we’re seeing the openness of Hollywood to include non-American talents, and there’s a precedence of movies and shows that already display Asian talents.
Hollywood fame isn’t as unreachable as everyone previously thought, and we have these Filipino actors and actresses to prove it:
Liza Soberano
Liza Soberano recently revealed in an interview that she is set to make her Hollywood debut in a film titled “Lisa Frankenstein”, where she’ll be starring with actors Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse.
“Lisa Frankenstein,” is set in the year 1989, and it follows the story of a typical high school girl that, through luck and coincidences, reanimates a handsome Victorian corpse back to life, and rearranges him to make the perfect man of her dreams. As of now, the movie’s release date is still undisclosed.
Bea Alonzo
Bea Alonzo is currently one of the Philippines’ biggest actresses, starring in classics that get quoted and re-aired even today. She’s making her Hollywood in a movie titled “Angel Warrior”, where she will be playing “Tala”, a Filipino living during the pre-WW2 era whose brushes with death push her to become a badass underground fighter. In the movie, her character joins Filipino and American guerillas as they fight off the Japanese in the island of Panay.
This is just the first step as she also set to star in a co-Hollywood production movie about Magellan’s journey to the Philippines. Bea will play the role of “Diwata”, a Mactan princess who falls in love with Hector, a translator for Magellan. She will be joined by Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan, who plays Diwata’s sister, Michael Copon playing the role of Lapu-Lapu, and Danny Trejo, Machete himself, who plays Magellan. The film is set to be released on June 12, 2023.
Heart Evangelista
Heart is already internationally known for her style, she may very well be the Kim Kardashian of the Philippines. With appearances in fashion shows, she’s regarded as an international fashion icon by famous designers and magazines all around the word. Even Kevin Kwan the author of “Crazy Rich Asians” requested Heart to audition for the movie. And she would’ve fit in seamlessly had she been cast.
Now the actress is setting her sights on making her Hollywood debut. In a recent interview she revealed that she had filmed a movie with Netflix. Despite the title or focus of the movie being unknown and Heart has no intention of spilling any of it either, but she’s supposedly excited for it when it does get released. Keep your eyes peeled the next time you see a trailer on your Netflix as it might just be Heart’s Hollywood debut.
