Harry Styles’ most important work to date may be in the form of the queer movie, ‘My Policeman’

After his last venture into the utopian world in Don’t Worry Darling, Harry Styles is now traveling back to the 1950s where he is caught tangled in a forbidden love affair in My Policeman.

On September 7 (Philippine time), the official trailer for the upcoming queer romantic film My Policeman dropped, which stars Styles as the titular policeman, Tom Burgess; Emma Corrin as Marion Taylor, a school teacher, and Tom’s wife; and David Dawson as Patrick Underwood, the museum curator.

Set in the 1950s, the full trailer first sees Tom and Marion being happily married. But as soon as Patrick enters the picture, Tom finds himself in a complicated situation and starts to have feelings for Patrick.

“This love is all-consuming,” Styles’ character says as the clip shows more glimpses of his relationship with Marion and Patrick.

At one point, it seems that Marion finds out about the affair and confronts Tom about the consequence of his and Patrick’s relationship to their marriage. “He’s [Patrick] trying to destroy our marriage,” Marion warns.

The clip then also flashes forward to the 1990s, where viewers get the chance to meet the older versions of the trio, which are played by Linus Roache as older Tom, Gina McKee as Marion, and Rupert Everett as Patrick.

Of course, the full trailer gained positive feedback and excitement from Twitter users. Undoubtedly, fans, especially the Harries (Styles’ fandom), raved about the upcoming period drama film and the actors’ acting chops, with some already claiming that it’ll receive nominations and awards soon.

My Policeman is based on the 2012 novel of the same name by Bethan Roberts that follows the trio as “they embark on an emotional journey in the 1950s.” As per the official synopsis of the film, My Policeman is “a beautifully crafted story of forbidden love and changing social conventions.”

Styles has described My Policeman’s theme in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, saying that it’s more than just “a gay story.”

“It’s not like ‘This is a gay story about these guys being gay.’ It’s about love and about wasted time to me,” he explained.

He added: “So much of gay sex in the film is two guys going at it, and it kind of removes the tenderness from it. There will be, I would imagine, some people who watch it who were very much alive during this time when it was illegal to be gay, and [Michael Grandage, the film director] wanted to show that it’s tender and loving and sensitive.”

My Policeman is directed by Genius director Michael Grandage, with its screenplay penned by Ron Nyswaner.

My Policeman is set to premiere in select theaters on October 21 and Prime Video on November 4.

My Policeman is the second Styles-led film to premiere this year, with Don’t Worry Darling being the first, where he starred alongside Florence Pugh, Chris Pine, Gemma Chen, and Olivia Wilde.
