The Marvel Cinematic Universe has continued to release content over the past year, with blockbusters like Spider-Man: No Way Home making box office history. There’s a lot of news about new shows and movies coming out for 2022, and sometimes it gets hard to keep up with all of the entertainment the MCU has to offer, especially as it establishes Phase 4 and the multiverse as a whole. So, let’s take an organized look at what Marvel Studios has for us this year.
Moon Knight (March 30, 2022)
First, we have a show called Moon Knight starring Oscar Isaac. The series is currently on its third episode out of six, and it’s proven to be a unique MCU show with darker themes and a complicated main character.
Oscar Isaac stars as Marc Spector and the titular character Moon Knight, who is a mercenary under the command of Khonshu, the Egyptian Moon God. Marc Spector also struggles with dissociative identity disorder, which means that he has multiple and distinct personalities. As a result, being a mercenary for a moon god just gets a tiny bit tougher for Mark. Ethan Hawke plays Arthur Harrow, the main antagonist of the series who serves the god Ammit.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 4, 2022)
Next on the list is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, directed by the great Sam Raimi. Raimi is well-known for directing the beloved Spider-man trilogy that starred Tobey Maguire. He’s now having his directorial debut for the MCU with this Dr. Strange sequel.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness takes place directly after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Steven Strange now has to face the consequences of opening up the multiverse, and as a result, there will be a ton of cameos and surprises coming our way. Fans already have some theories as to who will appear, even saying that Tom Cruise will appear as Iron Man.
Benedict Cumberbatch reprises his role as Doctor Strange, and the film will also star Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff, Rachel McAdams as Dr. Christine Palmer, and Benedict Wong as Wong.
Ms. Marvel (June 8, 2022)
In June, we’ll be introduced to the first Muslim superhero in the MCU – Ms. Marvel. The six-episode show will feature the 16-year-old Kamala Khan, who is a superfan of the heroes within the MCU, especially Captain Marvel. One day, she suddenly gains powers, and I imagine that the show will focus on her struggle of being a teen and the difficulties of being a superhero.
Actress Iman Vellani will play Kamala Khan or Ms. Marvel. The series is set for release on June 8, 2022.
Thor: Love and Thunder (July 8, 2022)
We just got a trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, the fourth installment of the Thor movies. This is Taika Waititi’s second time directing a Thor movie after he received much praise for revitalizing the god of Thunder with Thor: Ragnarok. The trailer for the movie shows us the blonde-haired god getting a new start after losing almost everything he loved in the events of Endgame and previous films. The trailer is colorful and seemingly light-hearted, but we never know what’s in store when Taika Waititi is at the helms of a movie.
Chris Hemsworth plays Thor, while Natalie Portman plays Jane Foster, who becomes Mighty Thor.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (November 11, 2022)
It will be interesting to see how Marvel Studios will plot the story of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which will be the sequel to the first Black Panther movie released back in 2018. You may know about Chadwick Boseman’s death and that he played T’Challa – the star of the first film. We don’t know much about the sequel, but we know that Marvel is unwilling to recast T’Challa or even make a digital copy of the character.
What we know is that most of that Black Panther is returning for the sequel. We have Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, and more.
She-Hulk (Late 2022)
She-Hulk will be a 10-episode series that will release later this year. There isn’t an official release date yet, but we know Mark Ruffalo reprises his role as Bruce Banner or the Hulk. The series will star Jennifer Walters played by Tatiana Maslany. She gets a blood transfusion from her cousin Bruce and gains powers similar to his.
What If…? (Season 2, Late 2022)
We don’t have many details about the second season of What If…?. The information we have is that the show will premiere in late 2022. We also know that The Watcher (played by Jeffrey Wright) will come back in the second season. We’re curious to see how the story of the multiverse will play out this season.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (December 2022)
The last content of the year will be from James Gunn, called The Guardians of Galaxy Holiday Special. Gunn says that it would be about 40 minutes long and would take place between Thor: Love and Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Given Marvel’s line-up of shows and films for this year, it looks like there’s still a lot for us to discover as MCU Phase 4 unfolds through these upcoming projects.
