Animated film ‘The Aristocats’ gets its live-action remake treatment

From Cinderella to Aladdin and The Lion King, another classic Disney animated film is getting a live-action adaptation treatment, and that’s no other than the 1970 film The Aristocats.

Deadline reported on January 20 that the film’s upcoming adaptation is in early development with the live-action team of Disney. Peter Rabbit director Will Gluck is set to write the film’s script alongside Disney/Pixar Onward writer Keith Bunin. Gluck will also produce the film through his production company Olive Bridge Entertainment.

The 1970 animated film follows the story of the aristocratic cats—Duchess and her kittens Marie, Berlioz, and Toulose—who will inherit their owner’s fortune. But when the owner’s butler learns that the cats will receive a massive fortune and he is left out of the will, he kidnaps the cats and dumps them in the countryside. The aristocats meet a street-smart alley cat named Thomas O’ Malley, and team up with him to help them get home before it’s too late.

Not much is known about the film’s cast and release date, but as per Deadline, The Aristocats will have a “similar look” to the remake of Lady in the Tramp, which was released in 2019.

Aside from The Aristocats, other classic Disney films are also getting live-action remakes.

Snow White is reported to start its production in 2022, starring Rachel Zegler, Gal Gadot, and Andrew Burnap.

The Little Mermaid wrapped its filming in July 2021 and is set to hit theaters on May 26, 2021, with Halle Bailey portraying Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and Daveed Diggs as Sebastian.

A remake of Pinocchio is also coming in Fall 2022, which stars Tom Hanks, Cynthia Erivo, Luke Evans, and features the voices of Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Keegan-Michael Key, and Lorrain Bracco.
