Final Fantasy 9, one of the most popular games made by Square Enix, is reportedly getting an animated adaptation and it will be produced and distributed by French studio Cyber Group Studios. The news was shared on Twitter by Square Enix social media manager Sunil Godhania.
Square Enix will reportedly be working on the animated series in collaboration with Cyber Group Studios, a Paris-based studio that develops and distributes children’s television shows. Shows that the studio has distributed include Mini Ninjas and adaptations of Zorro and Tom Sawyer.

Final Fantasy is one of the most popular video game franchises, having sold over 154 million copies worldwide. According to Cyber Group Studios CEO Pierre Sassmann, the franchise’s popularity and the opportunity it presents to expand the brand are what led Cyber Group to team-up with Square Enix to make an animated adaptation for Final Fantasy 9.
Final Fantasy 9 is one of the most popular games of the Final Fantasy franchise, well-known for its good storytelling and humor. It was originally released back in 2000 for the Playstation and sold over five million copies worldwide.
The animated adaptation of Final Fantasy 9 still doesn’t have a confirmed episode count and series length, but Sassmann said that the aim is to start production by the end of 2021 or the start of 2022.
The series will be aimed towards children between ages eight and thirteen. The studio is currently finalizing the series bible and prepping for pitching to broadcasters. Sissman said that the series will cater towards both fans of the video game and newcomers to the Final Fantasy 9 universe.
