The National Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Summit or NMMME Summit, an annual event hosted by the UP Mining, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Association, Inc. (UP 49ers) is finally back after conquering great heights during this ongoing pandemic. Amidst the limitations brought by the lockdown, on its 11th installment, this year’s NMMME Summit will be held completely online.
Headed by the UP 49ers, a premier student organization of the College of Engineering in the University of the Philippines – Diliman, the NMMME Summit aims to promote engineering and academic excellence, socio-civic welfare to students across the country and most importantly to showcase the progression of the MMM fields in the Philippines throughout the years. With this, the organization hopes to bring awareness to high school students and pique their interest about the Mining, Metallurgical and Materials industry as the future innovators of the next generation that will drive development of MMM courses in our country.
The 2021 NMMME Summit, with the theme: MMMitigate: Combating Disasters through MMM Innovations, is equipped with events centered in advocating different MMM innovations as a way to mitigate disasters. It is a very timely concept seeing as how we have experienced many unprecedented tribulations last year caused by not only the continuing COVID-19 pandemic but also by a streak of super typhoons, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. The organization has seen this as an opportunity to promote the enormous potential the MMM courses offer in helping alleviate our country’s current problems.
In the coming months of February and March 2021, various asynchronous and synchronous events were prepared by this year’s organizer. Asynchronous activities which include: iMMMerse video editing contest, Digital Art Contest and Feature Writing will be held throughout February and March, while synchronous talks and competitions which comprises of the Olympiad Quiz bee, Career Talks and Seminars and the Idea Challenge will be held on March 26-28 via Zoom.
One of the most awaited events every year is our Olympiad Quiz Bee. It allows several high school students to showcase their brain and wits. Olympiad encourages the student to expand delegates to expand their relevant knowledge in these fields of study by mining, metallurgical and materials engineering concepts in general science questions. There is also another thing to be excited about this year’s summit as the usual research competition was changed to the idea challenge, a ten-minute solution pitch about a community problem experience here in the Philippines. The participants must be able to capture the judge’s interests and curiosity at the same time convince them of the feasibility of their proposed solution using their breakthrough ideas and creativity.
The UP 49ers through the 2021 NMMME Summit as its flagship event, offers a great opportunity for schools to provide its students with a unique avenue for learning and skills development even in the comforts of their home. Throughout the years our organization has proved its dedication in providing students from all over the country with the most relevant and useful knowledge in the fields of MMM engineering in the NMMME Summit. With this, we encourage every high school student to come join us and be a part of this once-a-year opportunity to gain knowledge while having fun!
