Pasig City hosts Climathon 2020, a virtual ideation for climate action

How can we ensure that Pasigueños have access to nutritious, affordable, and sustainable  food, at all times?

This is the challenge that Climathon Pasig 2020 will tackle on November 13-15, with the help of  over 120 participants from all over the Philippines.

Climathon is an initiative by EIT Climate-KIC, a Knowledge and Innovation Community backed  by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, that is pushing for a zero-carbon,  climate resilient society. At the core of the program is the hackathon, wherein citizens are  empowered to develop their own solutions to help solve their cities’ most pressing  environmental issues.

Pasig was the first city to host Climathon in the Philippines in 2019, and this year, will be joined  by the cities of Silang and Parañaque – along with 145 other cities worldwide – who will be  running the hackathon in celebration of Global Climathon day on November 13,th.

Climathon Pasig 2020 is organized by Future Proof PH and Scale Solutions, and is co presented by Unionbank, through its UBP Xcellerator Program.

The winning solution will get funding from our sponsors, and support from the organizers and  the LGU, to implement a pilot program in one of the barangays in Pasig City.

Embracing the Online Format

New to this year is the all-online format of the Climathon. “We know that several sustainability  initiatives across the globe have been paused to the pandemic, but we did not want that to be  the case for the Climathon,” said Trish Esteban, General Manager of Future Proof PH, one of  the organizers of the event. “In some ways, bringing it online opens a lot of great opportunities,

too. Now, people from all over the Philippines can join from the comfort of their homes, and we  can have a more diverse set of coaches and mentors.”

Climathon Pasig 2020 will happen on two streams, for 72 hours. Talks, workshops, panel  discussions, and the final competition and judging, will happen via Zoom and on the Climathon  Philippines page, while the actual work from the teams and coaching will happen through a  private channel.

Participants and viewers alike will learn from speakers such as Allen Angeles, Head of CENRO  Pasig, Architect Joel Luna, Principal of Joel Luna Planning and Design, Illac Diaz, Founder of  Liter of Light, Virginia Benosa-Llorin, Campaigner Greenpeace Southeast Asia, Philippines, and  more.

There will also be wellness sessions such as yoga, drumstart, quilling, and calligraphy.

Bayanihan in Action

Beyond the hackathon, Climathon Pasig aims to be a long-term to bring the community together  to solve the climate challenges of the city.

“You see the bayanihan spirit throughout the event. Last year, we had individual and companies  lending their services, providing meals, and pitching in anything they can to help with the event,”  said Carla Mumar, CEO of Scale Solutions. “We know that this is a start in building a  sustainable ecosystem where people, businesses, and the local government are innovating and  working together.”

This year’s Climathon Pasig 2020 is made possible through the support of the following  Partners: Unionbank as Co-Presenter, Greenpeace and Love is Unlimited as Silver Sponsors,  Burket and SMART as Sponsors, Liter of Light, Orangefix, Make Sense, Evrile, Business for  Sustainable Development as Organization Partners, WWF and Lamp Co. as Thought  Leadership Partners, Yacap and Ulap, Young Environmental Forum, WiTech & Cloop,  Saricycling & Hatchhub, as Community Partners, and BusinessWorld, OffCrowd, CGEYA,  Sustainarumble, and Inquirer.Net as Media Partners.

Registrations for participants is now closed, but individuals and companies looking to support  the cause can still partner with the event. For more details, please visit:
