Listeners defend ‘Dogshow Divas’ as critics call the podcast ‘out of touch with Philippine pop culture’

Dogshow Divas have definitely made it!

A popular Filipino comedy podcast, ‘Dogshow Divas,’ found itself at the center of online debate after a post on X criticized the show for being “poorly written” and “out of touch with Philippine pop culture.”

Dogshow Divas

The post, published on October 31, by a user who has now privated their account, garnered over 48,000 views and sparked reactions from the podcast’s listeners.

In the post, the user argued that ‘Dogshow Divas’ “need a better writer,” suggesting that the show bring in a guest who is “more informed in Philippine pop culture” and eventually replace one of the hosts.

Additionally, the user expressed disappointment, saying they had high expectations for what they described as “a Filipino queer podcast discussing pop culture ala stream of consciousness.” However, they claimed the show “fell flat” and “sounded pilit” just for the sake of mentioning sponsors.

Many listeners were quick to defend the podcast, pointing out that ‘Dogshow Divas’ is an improvised comedy show, and not a scripted pop culture commentary program.

One X user clarified the purpose of the podcast as “everything and nothing all at once.”

Listeners also came to the show’s defense by referencing its own title–Dogshow.

In Filipino internet slang, “dogshow” often refers to chaotic, nonsensical humor and spontaneous banter, much like friends joking around without structure and filter. Listeners argued that the podcast’s unpredictability is what makes it stand out from other podcasts.

“Improv and strength ng hosts at doon din naman talga nagsimula kaya ‘wag kayong desisyon diyan,” another user wrote.

The podcast has also gained the attention of Eraserheads lead vocalist, Ely Buendia. The hosts wondered how to pronounce Buendia’s last name in one of the show’s episodes, whether it’s “Bwen-dee-ya” or “Bwen-ja.”

The Filipino musician clarified in a TikTok video that his surname is pronounced as “Bwen-dee-ya,” as that is how his family has always pronounced their surname.

Hosted by comedian and content creators Macoy Dubs and Baus Rufo, ‘Dogshow Divas’ has garnered a loyal following for its absurd humor and exaggerated takes on Filipino pop culture and the internet. Their YouTube channel currently has 64,900 subscribers, and each podcast episode averages around 150,000 views.
