In a now deleted post, an X (former Twitter) user recently posted about how a local thrift shop in Cubao is allegedly selling “ukay dogs.” The user claimed that the dogs don’t have access to water or food, and they don’t appear to be well taken care of.
With recent calls for animal cruelty awareness in the country, many believe the post was out of concern for the dogs. Some respondents of the original post have mentioned to call and report the sighting to the authorities, for what could possibly be animal cruelty on display. Many of the thrift shop’s regular customers also added that they personally saw these dogs in cages, and were shocked that they could be for “sale.”
After the tweet went viral, the thrift shop owner posted an official statement and thread on Facebook and X regarding the issue to settle the matter and clear up misunderstandings.
“We do not know where the poster got the information about us selling “Ukay Dogs.” The dogs are not for sale, and they are being well taken care of. Thank you, and God bless,” the thrift shop owner said.
The owner clarified that the dogs were not for sale because they belonged to them; they assured the public that the dogs were well taken care of as they do not know how the user came up with the idea as she was not there all the time.
They added that they bring the dogs to their thrift shop so that they can better look after them instead of leaving them behind their home. The dogs are well-maintained and well-provided with proper food, water, ventilation, and a wide enough cage.
The statement ended with them demanding the user to issue a public apology for the defamation she had caused their business and family. They implied that they will take legal action as they can not let this malicious post pass.
Following the thrift shop’s official statement, the OP, who posted about the “ukay dogs,” deleted her post, apologized for the defamation she caused, and reached out to the owners to settle the issue. The user then deactivated her account.
Moreover, following the store’s clarification, some X users went on to call out OP.
