A singer/songwriter from Singapore, Joel Tan has released an EP which has been hailed by iTunes and Spotify, and has opened for international acts such as Us The Duo and Christina Perri.
The Gentle Bones journey started one day in 2010, when he decided to pick up the guitar. Songwriting became second nature, as lyrics and melodies began forming themselves. “I’ve always preferred the idea of creation than the steps behind it,” he said – and this approach has clearly been favourable.
The name Gentle Bones began as two seemingly random words put together, and effortlessly evokes a sense of mystery and almost strikes one as a paradox. In many ways, this is the perfect descriptor for his music. Slightly mysterious, a little gentle – the perfect invitation to share his heart.
More than just a great live performer, Gentle Bones strives to connect with people through his music. His work has a “heart on your sleeve” quality to it, which is evident in his social following – over 1 million views on YouTube, 17,000 YouTube subscriptions, 14,500 Instagram followers and counting.
CURRENT SINGLE — GENTLE BONES “SIXTY FIVE”
Subsequently, Gentle Bones recorded his first song ‘Until We Die’ in 2012, which was later picked up by local radio stations and went viral online. In that same year, he played at the Mosaic Music Festival in Singapore. This gave him the impetus to continue working on his music. Two years later, he released his eponymous EP, which went straight to number 1 in the Singapore iTunes store even prior to its official release. Industry leaders hailed the EP launch party as the biggest by any local artiste, paving the way for an illustrious music career ahead.
2014 also gave rise to a few major milestones. Gentle Bones was invited to play at Ignite Music Festival, which aims to showcase local artistes. Later that year, ‘Until We Die’ was number 1 on the iTunes charts with the follow up singles “Save Me” and “Elusive” also charting at #1 and #3 respectively on the same charts. “Until We Die” was also named Singapore’s favorite track for the year on music streaming service Spotify. To end off the year, Gentle Bones was invited to play at The Float@Marina Bay, to a sold out crowd of 25,000 people.
Looking to 2015, he has already written and recorded a brand new song titled “You’re Almost There” for the 2015 SEA Games soundtrack. Gentle Bones hopes to take his music to a bigger audience, and continue creating great tunes that everyone will enjoy.
