The music magazine’s editorial director Hannah Karp said in a press release that Rodrigro’s rise to stardom is “the stuff of pop music legend.” She then described Rodrigo as one of the most authentic and exciting new artists due to her incredible storytelling and songwriting talents.
“Connecting with audiences across generations through emotionally charged songs about heartbreak, jealousy, and growing up, she’s achieved absolutely incredible chart success for a debut artist,” said Karp. “We are thrilled to celebrate her unique voice and the enormous impact she’s had on fans around the globe in such a short time.”
Rodrigo broke through in 2021 when she first released her top-charting single ‘drivers license.’ Shortly after its release, the song became no. 1 in Billboard charts and was nominated in various categories, including Song of the Year at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards and 2021 Apple Music Awards.
Rodrigo continued breaking records with her first full-length album ‘SOUR’ which won the Album of the Year at the 2021 People’s Choice Awards and 2021 Apple Music Awards. Rodrigo finished off the year 2021 with a bang as she was nominated in 7 categories at the 2022 Grammy Awards, including the coveted Album of the Year and Song of the Year.
Rodrigo is the first honoree of Woman of the Year in their debut year and the first Asian-American artist to receive it. Prior to Rodrigo, Billboard has also named Reba McEntire, Ciara, Beyoncé, Fergie, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, P!nk, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, and Cardi B as ‘Woman of the Year’ in the past years.
