If there’s one thing that this recent novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has taught us, it’s this–life is fleeting. One day, you’re happy, healthy, and full of life and the next, you’re gone. For many of us, this is a hard truth to swallow–but it’s also teaching us to live every moment meaningfully. Case-in-point this young boy’s wish to have his organs donated.
Ridge Scolley was like any other American kid who enjoyed playing basketball with his family and friends. Unfortunately, while playing a game with his cousins, Scolley lost his balance and hit his head. This caused him a head injury which he never really recovered from.
In a GoFundMe page created by Scolley’s aunt Stacey Morris, she shared, “Mike, Shannon, Clara, and Troy have made the decision based on knowing that Ridge would want to help others by donating his organs. Ridge will be turning 10 tomorrow, March 10th and since he cannot receive gifts, he will be giving the gift of life to one or more through organ donation.”
To honor the late child’s wishes, the family started with the donor process last March 10. People reported via The Grand Forks Herald that the child’s family “stood outside the hospital and raised its ‘donate life’ flag, which signals that an organ transplant is occurring inside.”
According to People’s report, one of Scolley’s organ donations has already helped save a 6-year-old boy.
At the moment, the family is asking for the public’s help in raising funds for Scolley’s funeral service, which will happen on March 22. And as of this writing, the family is at 48% of their desired goal. So for those interested in donating to Ridge Scolley’s family, they may visit Morris’ GoFundMe page here.
