Police gets called in for ‘lion sightings’ only to discover it’s just a large dog

When wild animals escape the zoo, more often than not the police and animal control are called in to control the situation. So, when multiple reports came in about a lion strolling in the streets, the police in Molina de Segura, Spain, immediately went into action and checked out the scene.

To their surprise, it wasn’t actually a lion that was found in the street–rather, it was a very large dog with an unusual haircut.

According to the police department’s Twitter post, officers realized it was actually a canine after scanning it for a microchip ID–a device that implanted in the dog’s skin so authorities can identify its owner. They have called the canine’s owner accordingly and as of this writing, the dog has been rightfully claimed.

But one question remains, why did the owner give his or her dog that kind of haircut?

The Molina de Segura police force told Huffington Post that they haven’t yet found an answer as to why the dog looked like that.

“We’re investigating and waiting for some results. We don’t know the motive for shaving it that way. For now, there’s no justifiable motive. We have to confirm the vaccines and documents are correct, but fortunately, the dog is fine,” a spokesperson told the news outlet.

Since the image was posted on March 8, a lot of online users couldn’t help but laugh at the situation–sharing various laughing gifs in the comment section.

However, there were some people who couldn’t help but share their distaste over the owner’s decision to shave their pet’s fur like that. One person’s comment–when translated–says, “Leaving him without the protective layer of his hair is very irresponsible. Giving the owner a good fine would not be bad.” While another one wrote, “The shaving they have done [to this animal] is outrageous. Dogs with that type of fur cannot be shaved. It is very possible that it will no longer grow [in] uniform and [be] bald.”

We hope that the police continue to investigate further into the well-being of the dog and here’s to hoping he won’t be flagged as another “lion sighting”.
