2019 promised us a lineup of exciting movies and television shows–and the year did not disappoint. With a wide range of genres ranging from action to drama, this past year has brought us an unforgettable lineup of film moments that will surely stay in viewers’ memories until 2020 (and maybe even, until their whole lifetimes).
Here are 10 of the biggest scenes that defined 2019 movies and television series:
Iron Man’s Infinity Gauntlet ‘snap’ in Avengers: Endgame
Since Marvel fans watched Avengers: Infinity War, they have been dying to know what will become of earth’s favorite heroes after losing more than half of its team. So when Avengers: Endgame first premiered, fans flocked to the cinemas to purchase tickets to the highly-anticipated sequel. Their excitement over the movie even prompted the hashtag #DontSpoilTheEndgame to trend on social media and to stop spoilers from spreading online.
Much to the delight of many moviegoers, the film featured unforgettable scenes that will definitely stay in the minds and hearts of Marvel fans. Although Captain America’s “Avengers assemble” line and the selfless death of Black Widow are memorable in their own rights, it is Iron Man’s Infinity Gauntlet snap that really made the movie iconic. Because not only did Iron Man’s actions resurrect many of our favorite fallen heroes, but it also marked the end of an era for Marvel as it retires three of its original cast members.
Not to mention, Iron Man’s death was so dramatic that it not only brought moviegoers to tears but it also influenced the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Disney to release a deleted scene involving a conversation between Tony Stark and the future version of his daughter Morgan.
This is indeed one of the movie deaths we’re still trying to get over!
Arya’s defeat of the Night King in Game of Thrones
Ever since season 1 of Game of Thrones, fans have been waiting to see Jon Snow defeat the Night King. To their surprise, the former Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch wasn’t the one responsible for the death of the Night King but rather, it was his younger sister Arya.
With her stealthy skills and training from Jaqen H’gar, Arya was able to defeat the night king and put an end to the war between the living and living dead.
Though many fans were not delighted with the outcome of the Battle of Winterfell, they can agree that this was one of the most surprising twists in the whole series.
The parting of Woody and Buzz in Toy Story 4
Toy Story 3 brought an end to our favorite toy-to-human friendship between Woody and Andy. Given this, Toy Story 4 picks up after that scene and shows the toys being played with Bonnie, the little girl with whom Andy left his playthings with. However, all is not well in Bonnie’s care, as Woody finds himself neglected and ignored by the child.
Eager to make his new owner happy, Woody keeps tabs on the aloof, “made-up” toy Forky as he tries to escape Bonnie. But when Forky’s plan actualizes, Woody must travel back to Bonnie to return Forky.
On the way, he reunites with his former love interest and Sally’s toy Bo Peep, who teaches him that more good can be done as an owner-less toy. Considering this, Woody returns Forky to Bonnie but parts ways with Buzz Lightyear and many of his longtime friends.
It’s a bittersweet moment that will make you realize even our favorite childhood characters grow up and part ways.
Joker’s dance in the Joker movie
Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker was unlike any of the previous movie villains we’ve seen before–in the sense that his portrayal showcased mental health issues that some people struggle with. And the moment, when he accepted his mental illness and took charge of his life, was commemorated in a dance scene on the stairs.
This scene was memorable for two reasons: it marked Arthur Fleck’s introduction as the Joker and it was also the start of a slew of Joker memes.
The Losers defeat Pennywise in IT: Chapter Two
When the Losers were younger, they had a temporary win over the child-eating clown Pennywise. In the sequel, they have grown into adults who’ve all moved on with their lives–with the exception of Mike . So when Mike reunites the gang to fulfill their promise of finally defeating Pennywise, the group is reluctant to face the supernatural monster again. But as more people go missing, the Losers band together and put an end to IT’s mayhem.
The Losers face a long and grueling battle against Pennywise but ultimately succeed at defeating the creature.
This final battle not only marked the end of the IT storyline but also allowed viewers to say goodbye to two of the film’s characters, namely Eddie Kaspbrak and Stanley Uris.
Jesse Pinkman’s return in the El Camino movie
Breaking Bad was possibly one of the most highly-rated series to ever hit television. Though the show ended with the death of Walter White, it continued its storyline with the 2019 movie, El Camino.
El Camino follows the story of Jesse Pinkman–Walter White’s former meth partner–as he runs away from his past and begins his new life.
This much-awaited movie marked the official end of the Breaking Bad story–giving fans closure as to what happened to Jesse Pinkman after White’s death.
Baby Yoda’s appearance in The Mandalorian
When Disney+ officially launched this year, Star Wars fans couldn’t wait to start binge-watching The Mandalorian. Though what surprised viewers the most wasn’t the plot, it was the sheer cuteness of Baby Yoda.
With his small hands and animatronic puppet features, this character stole the show and definitely won the internet over!
Elsa’s ascension from Queen of Arendelle to the fifth spirit in Frozen 2
The first Frozen movie showed us Elsa’s ice-wielding powers. And in its sequel, viewers got a better glimpse of just how powerful Elsa truly was.
Frozen 2 followed Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven as they ventured into the Enchanted Forest to identify the reasons behind the events in Arendelle. Through their quest, Anna and Elsa were not only able to identify the cause of the bad occurrences but they were also able to find their callings.
Anna, for one, became the new Queen of Arendelle while Elsa was destined to be the fifth spirit–taking her place in Ahtohallen with the other spirits.
General Leia and Kylo Ren’s deaths and Rey’s adoption of the Skywalker family name
Since news of Carrie Fisher’s death hit news sites, fans were curious to know how they’d incorporate her character in Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. But Star Wars fans were not disappointed as the film gave General Leia, formerly known Princess Leia, an honorable death–sacrificing the last of energy to get in touch with her son Ben Solo a.k.a. Kylo Ren.
Han Solo and Leia’s son Kylo Ren likewise featured his selflessness by giving all of his “life force” to save Rey–an act that ultimately led to his demise. While moviegoers were left thinking that “the Skywalker legacy has ended”, the movie surprises them with the twist of Rey adopting the Skywalker family name.
Although the last film received a number of negative reviews from critics and fans alike, it marked the end of the new Star Wars trilogy and allowed fans to say goodbye to many its original cast members.
Geralt of Rivia’s reunion with Princess Cirilla
Since episode 1 of the series, Geralt of Rivia has been told of premonitions that say “he can’t outrun the girl in the woods” and that “she is his destiny.” It is soon discovered that the girl in Geralt’s prophecy is Princess Cirilla of Cintra.
Throughout the 8 episodes of season 1, viewers are left on the edge of their seats, anticipating the meeting of The Witcher and the Princess. So when it finally happened, fans of the fantasy series were not only relieved but they also can’t wait to see what happens in season 2 now that Geralt and Ciri are together.
