Filipinos would do just about anything to stay on a budget, many times taking some unusual steps just to avoid shelling out cash.
Such was the case of airplane passenger Gel Rodriguez when she was in a Manila airport: she was faced with the dilemma of paying to check in her luggage because it was too heavy—2 kilograms over the 7-kilo carry-on limit of the airline.
Rather than pay for the excess baggage, the Davao-based traveler decided to put on as many clothes as she could. This included shirts, jackets and pants.
Thanks to her solution, she succeeded in lowering her baggage weight down to 6.5 kilograms, meaning she was wearing a not-so-light 2.5 kilos of clothes.
Rodriguez shared a picture on Oct. 2 on Facebook of her posing triumphantly after making her money-saving hack. The picture drew much amusement, with over 34,000 likes and 21,000 shares as of this writing.
When asked if she would do it again, she told Vice Asia in an Oct. 15 report, “Maybe not. It was really hot. I don’t recommend other people do it.”
As budget traveling becomes more and more popular, so does the resourcefulness of passengers, who at times will sacrifice their comfort for some savings. /ra
